Too Much to Do and Not Enough Hours
Aug. 20th, 2007 11:43 amC'mon folks, I want to get my fannish groove back!! Meme me!
Give me two characters and I'll tell you three things the first likes and three dislikes about the second. Panfandom baby!!!
Sitting in the theater on Saturday, watching Once, I realized the scene in my short story that needed to happen to achieve what I see is the central goal of that piece. It just made perfect sense to me, and god it's been so long since that happened, since enough of my brain was working things out to connect to something outside and pull it into the internal narrative. It's amazing when that happens.
I'm also astonished by how much the main character continues to both be me, and be her own person, how she is growing and developing, and yet using my stories and events, and how much of what I want to say to my father and can't comes out for her in ways that I didn't understand before. This may end up being the best thing I've written and my family will never be able to read it.
Bangs head on desk until my brains come back to life.
And dudes, someone tell me that there's a lolzombie macro that says, "I can haz brainz?" I know I didn't make that up.

Date: 2007-08-20 07:05 pm (UTC)2. She's blond. He's always been fond of blonds, even of the wide-eyed, smart mouthed, all heart, 19, traveling the universe with a godlike alien kind. He wants to put his arm around her and tease out a smile and listen to her talk about the wonders she's seen.
3. Her wonder. She's still got it, all quivery and bouncy and full of life in her tight tops, she's got all this wonder for the whole wide universe and when he looks at that, he starts to remember what it felt like.
Dislikes:
1. Sometimes that same frelling wonder makes him want to shove her into a deep hole (whereas sometimes her blond quivery bounciness makes Aeryn want to shove her into a big hole.)
2. She is not a sharer. Brought all sorts of candy with her, and chips, and never offered him any. Of course, it might be because Rygel tried to eat the Tardis clean, but, you know, a little bit of Violet Flake would have really hit the spot.
3. She's stubborn in a universe where stubborn will get you hunted and killed (and alive, sometimes it keeps you alive), and she's stubbornly put her faith and trust in this frelling godlike alien and John just knows it's going to end badly. It always, always does.

Date: 2007-08-20 07:12 pm (UTC)1. The girl's confident with a weapon, moves fluidly with them, has an ease that comes with years of killing.
2. She thinks John's an old man, not worth bothering with. Aeryn wishes more of the universe felt the same.
3. She's got a brazen veneer that bonds her to Chiana in that kind of bitchy pissy way that the Nebari had bonded with Jool and Aeryn's never been more grateful to see Chiana find a friend. Even after she had to hock one of Rygel's hidden jewels to bail the two of them out of jail. She did it gladly, relieved to see a spark back in Chi's eye.
Dislikes:
1. The mess. The girl's a walking nightmare of disorder - from her quarters to her kills. She lacks... grace.
2. Her mouth. Aeryn's been practicing the "We do not hit our guests or each other" philosophy for some cycles. The smart mouth on this girl, John calls it sass with way to much glee, may end up being the straw that brakes the mammals black. Or something like that.
3. Her need. She's too far away from home, too filled with bravado and a need to act out and Aeryn's afraid it's going to get her killed. She's got the potential to be an asset to them. She's human and it makes John happy to have her around, but she's uncontrollable, and Aeryn's spending a lot of nights not sleeping as a result.

Date: 2007-08-20 08:18 pm (UTC)2. He doesn't say much, but what he does say is both useful and elegant. And she likes the desert dry wit.
3. His biceps. Seperate from his man mountainness. She could dangle off one of those arms like a monkey.
Dislikes:
1. He's too quiet. He's a little more vocal during sex, but mostly it's raised eyebrows and confident touches and that's all well and good, but she wants some verbal action. Plus, it's unfair to compare any partner to a Luxan with a 12 foot tongue, and intellectually she knows that.
2. She knows she's frelling him because he reminds her of D'Argo. And she doesn't mean to blame him, but she's run out of room to blame Crichton or Aeryn or the Narl, and Teal'c takes it really well and it makes her hate him a little more.
3. He's too practical. Too duty bound. Too honorable. Too right. She vows not to talk to him again after he tells her to grow up. She did her growing up thank you very much, and all it got her was pain and loss. She wants to frell, and fuck, and do what she wants. She doesn't need a reminder that she's not a child anymore, that others depend on her, and she certainly doesn't want it from a terse alien who had a snake in his belly.

Date: 2007-08-20 09:58 pm (UTC)2. She's good in a crisis and doesn't flinch at the sight of blood.
3. She takes things in stride. Says she used to know this fella who opened her eyes and broke her heart. After that, a little ER triage doesn't seem like such a big deal, nor a little spy repair.
Dislikes:
1. Martha's a Londoner, born and bred and she refuses to see that ocasionally, the random act of subway violence is necessary. They've agreed to disagree, but sometimes Fiona wants to ask her what she'd do if an entire country camped out in her home.
2. She can't drive on the right hand side, and doesn't seem in a hurry to learn. This has been minorly inconvenient, and majorly terrifying the one time now of them had a choice and Fi was bleeding and Michael was unconscious and they needed to get away or get dead.
3. She's nursing that broken heart like it's open and fresh and casted, is doing nothing to mend it and move on, or fine the man and get him back. It's starting to piss Fiona off.

Date: 2007-08-20 10:05 pm (UTC)2. Crichton understands the beauty and terror of the unknown, of taking the next step. He risked his life for the unknown, and Toby admires that.
3. Crichton, for all intents and purposes, seems to have more woman trouble than Toby. He definitely likes that. Because Crichton's got a toned body and all his hair and a southern drawl, and sometimes a man needs to be able to compare himself favorably to an all-American hero.
Dislikes:
1. Crichton represents the unknown, the ugly part of it. The fear and panic and PTSD and he refuses to see that the American people are scared, and while Toby wishes that people were more open-minded, he also doesn't want them terrified.
2. When Crichton comes to the White House, every single woman in the entire staff leaves their posts to see him, swooning and giggling like he was the fifth Beatle. They don't even do that for the President.
3. He's a risk to security. He's a risk to their agenda. He's all risk, and Toby hates that it's true, hates that what he wants more than anything is to advice the President to open up space exploration, to send an international team of scientists and scholars and civilians, and yet it just isn't an option in this nuclear, dirty age, and Toby hates that John Crichton is a daily reminder of everything that's wrong.

Date: 2007-08-20 11:08 pm (UTC)How about Sam Carter and Jool?
no subject
Date: 2007-08-21 05:30 pm (UTC)2. She doesn't mince words. She says exactly what she's thinking, and Sam sort of longs for that ability - both as part of a chain of command, and as a woman raised in her own particular culture, she's always self-editing. Jool doesn't seem to have an editor.
3. She's brave. It's a kind of brave that baffles Sam, because the girl is obviously terrified of nearly everything, but shaking and stammering and sometimes crying (and definitely whining), she still gets the job done.
Dislikes:
1. Metal-melting scream. Enough said.
2. Even Sam recognizes that Jool's fashion sense is... questionable.
3. There's confidence and then there's arrogance and Jool reminds Sam more than a little of Rodney McKay, and she's not sure if she's jealous of that arrogance or merely put out by it but either way it kind of pisses her off.

Date: 2007-08-21 05:23 pm (UTC)2. He smells really good. Actually, she likes that about all of them. She's spent a lot of time around a lot of people who don't bath terribly often for various reasons, and it's an utter treat to be around these pretty smelling men. When they play basketball, even the sweat has this clean tinge to it that makes her a little giddy.
3. His hands. They're terribly competent, clever, calloused. When he draws his hand up her back, over her bare skin, she can feel the ridges made by the handle of his rifle, the heel of his palm where it's still shiny from his time as a pilot. He keeps his nails clean and trimmed and it's always a pleasure to feel hands like that against her.
Dislikes:
1. He continually makes the mistake of thinking that in charge means leading, and she's being lead by her own willingness. She is not part of his structure of command, no matter how many times he tries to insist upon it. Of course, there are times when she lets him tell her exactly what to do, but as much fun as it is to play, sex is not real life. She will only take so many orders outside of the bedroom. Or the storage closet. Or the tent. Or...
2. He looks at her sometimes like he understands what she's thinking. She doesn't like that. She doesn't need his sort of compassion. She has Daniel for empathy. She needs Mitchell for something else. A wall to push against, rough practicalilty. She doesn't want to know his secrets, and she doesn't want to share her own.
3. He looks at the greater good over individual lives. She knows it's his job, but she doesn't have to like it. During the days and weeks spent waiting to find out if Daniel was alive or dead, she hated him fiercely. Hated both men. Hated herself. But it was easiest to hate Mitchell, to hate Cameron for choosing that moment to come into his own as a leader. She goes to him two weeks into the endless waiting and they fuck violently against the door of his on base quarters, risking all sorts of potential disciplinary action (they are not quiet and they are not discreet. She rends grooves in his back with her nails. He puts bruises on her hips, her neck. Her rage starts to burn itself out until he holds onto her, pressing her body into the metal door, holding her up, understanding, and she feels the hate come right back like relief.
She stays with him every night until Daniel returns and they don't talk about it, no one talks about it. Three weeks after they get Daniel back, Mitchell sneaks into her tent on an off world mission. She's next up for watch (they've been doing double duty since Daniel's return). She opens her eyes, and he's squatting there looking tired, and older than she remembers seeing him. It's getting close to morning and she always leaves the light burning in the tent, despite multiple warnings of fire. She doesn't like to sleep in the dark.
"My turn?" she asks, sleepy still, and he nods and puts his hand on her arm.
"If," he starts to say, and there's something about the tone of his voice that wakes her up. "If you still need somethin' to hate," he says, "I don't mind if it's me."
She thinks about that. Reaches up to touch him on the cheek. Everything has shifted since Daniel came back, and she's not sure which shifts she's prepared to accomodate.
She kisses Mitchell, and the angle is awkward and his mouth is dry and vaguely sweet.
"I mind," she says, and goes to take her watch.
