It's a writing day at work, which makes me deliriously happy. In part because it means I can finish my SMRT-TV article, and in part because I'm just so damned happy when I get to write all day.

Happy Birthday to [livejournal.com profile] raithen. You had a big year last year, and here's hoping this one brings you much happiness.

My mother and my aunt drove out to CA from Colorado and Wyoming, and when they arrived at their hotel and we were unpacking their car, I found bags and bags of fruit. They had gone upstairs to deliver a load of luggage to the room, and when they returned I asked them in this pleading voice to please, please tell me that they'd purchased the fruit in California. My mother looks at me like I'm crazy, and says, "Of course. We bought it when we stopped to go to the bathroom." Bags of fruit though. Like 8 bags of fruit. My aunt roles her eyes, "You know your mother, she can't resist fruit stands." My mother nods vigorously, "I think I was a farmer in my past life." A crazy farmer, maybe. I watch her walk down the hall and ask her why she has a band aid and an ankle bracelet on. "They're my magnets," she says.

She's always been this way, though. I ate soy cheese (and hated it) long before it became fashionable. We used to get Columbo frozen yogurt at Poor Richard's bookstore that was this cold, tart grainy desert served in an old fashioned metal ice cream cup and I loved it. It was the follow up to avocado cheese and sprout sandwiches.

I'm not sure where I was going with that, just thoughts of how I'm turning into my mother in some ways, and how much she surprises me in others. She grew up in this rundown railroad town in Western Wyoming, and yet she's so bright and generous, so open to new things - foods, medicines, people. I find her so remarkable even when she is bat shit crazy.

I spent far too long deciding what to watch while I wrote last night, and when I finally popped in my tape of SIW because it's the perfect block of writing time M. and a friend of his walked in, so I was relegated to the other couch while they played video games. The upside being that I discovered our liberated DSL has returned, and therefore I could download some vids.
