When fannishness and reality collide. Okay, not so much reality as those glorious giddy feelings that arise when media - film, TV, books, anime, newspaper, art- says something aloud that expresses exactly what you think, what you want and long for.

Watching the end of The West Wing marathon on Bravo last night, avoiding my freelance work like the plague it currently feels like, and it's the end of 20 Hours in America, pt. 2, which I love, and I had forgotten this:

TOBY -If our job teaches us anything, it's that we don't know what the next President's gonna face. And if we choose someone with vision, someone with guts, someone with gravitas, who's connected to other people's lives, and cares about making them better...

if we choose someone to inspire us, then we'll be able to face what comes our way and achieve things...

we can't imagine yet. Instead of telling people who's the most qualified, instead of telling people who's got the better ideas, let's make it obvious. It's going to be hard.

JOSH -Then we'll do what's hard.

And that's all of it, right there. What I want, what I believe in, what I frequently despair of in our current political system, and yet I still think it's something worth longing for. And at the same time, I love that it's part of a television show, something as fantastical as anything I watch on SciFi despite the actuality of the office, and I love that too, that there are writers who embrace these ideals, who came give me characters with the weight to say them, so that the words and the sentiment and the force behind them are something pure and hard and worthwhile.

I feel the same way when John tells Rygel, "I figure the right thing starts at the beginning of the day." It could be such a cliche, but it's rooted in something, in conflict and betrayal and a quiet moment of consideration where forgiveness and disappointment hang in the balance.

As part of this, go read [livejournal.com profile] searose's treatise on why she loves Farscape. You can find it here. There are threads of spoilers, but mostly, you should be pretty safe to read it if you've any idea of what the series entails. It 's a combination of Searose's calm, clear and thoughtful prose and the genuine joy and appreciation that she can infuse her subject with. It doesn't appear giddy on the surface, but there's such warmth running through it, such clarity and it made me incoherent and thrilled.

There's been a ton of fangirl music squeeing goin' on. I need to go back and revel a little. Bought myself Hymns from the 49th Parallel, and The Streets first album this weekend. Need to get the new Hem, and well, the endless supply of music I need just never seems to dissipate:)

Finally, for those of you out there obsessed with the Braff, Fresh Air is interviewing him today. (I don't know if it's Terry Gross or not because she seems to be on vacation, but here in LA it airs at 1 p.m. and at 7 p.m. and is available on-line through the NPR site).

P.S. Use of this icon is strictly justified by it's ability to make me blush like a school girl and get warm and distracted. As my blood is still adjusting, I have a ready made excuse if someone sees me swoon at my desk.

Ah, ah!!! She's mentioned the icon, so I can safely bring the subject up!!! I love the icon - what does it mean??

Just, just...it's yummy, it's edible (ahem, it's John)...but what does it meeeeeaaaaan?? ::whiney voice::

And in other news...I have the Streets first album as well!! I must admit to being not much of a music girl - but I do have a particular taste (British indie soulful lyrics) and the Streets is so NOT what I normally go for. But I love it! ("Dry your eyes, mate" has become a catch phrase in our office - lol).

Hee, it's just such a fun album, poignant and a little gritty and melodic and funky. I've had one of the songs on repeat for a year from a compilation album, and was so thrilled to see the whole thing finally being released here.

Hee. The icon, well, the icon came about from a long, relatively goofy discussion with Feldman (and came out of my desire to have another icon made from a line out of little Acorns:)

I was working on a story that was just killing me, couldn't get to the porn, the payoff and Feldman was walking me through it, calling me on the faults and trying to talk up the good points. Part of the story is John selling his pants, and well, that scenario just lead to a series of word plays that ended us up at the icon slogan.

*gears begin turning*

And you know, I can't even explain why "Pants me like I'm porn" is so damned funny--it just is, plus it brings to mind ripping off someone's clothes like they're a gift-wrapped box of everything you ever wanted for x-mas.

I, yeah. Exactly. It's just funny, and I don't exactly know why either, but it makes me giggle everytime I say it in my head. And I think you've nailed the imagery as well:) That's exactly how it sounds, what it brings to mind.

I love that one-off Leo gives in "ITSOTG I" --

BARTLET: Why are you doing this? You're a player. You're bigger in the party than I am. Hoynes would make you national chairman. Leo! Tell me this isn't one of the twelve steps.

LEO: Yeah, that's what it is. Right after admitting we're powerless over alcohol and that a higher power can restore us to sanity, that's where you come in.

BARTLET: Leo.

LEO: Because I'm tired of it -- year after year after year after year having to chose between the lesser of Who cares? Of trying to get myself excited about a candidate who can speak in
complete sentences. Of setting the bar so low, I can hardly look at it. They say a good man can't get elected President. I don't believe that, do you?

That spark, that's what politics should make a person feel: hope. Of course, in the real world I truly am impressed when candidates can pronounce the word nuclear correctly on a consistent basis. ;-)

I love that moment, them standing in the cold, and a good man being elected President, wanting the candidate for him or herself, not simply because the candidate is better than the alternative.

Oh god yes, to both parts of that equation:)

i love that you wrote this: "but it's rooted in something". because in the midst of whatever's going on it's so vital to know that there are truths and sincerity, and good intensions. i love the honesty and clarity of the *vision* of farscape.

i've been revisiting episodes and waiting for the mini-series. there's nothing i don't like about that show. one of the things i love is the sense of sincerity and trust towards the audience on the part of the people who made the show happen.

thank you for the link to searose's post on farscape. *g*

Me too, because it doesn't offer easy answers, but it does give you things to hold on and ponder and sort of roll around in your mind.

and they keep rolling. ;)

farscape has become another way that i filter the world. maybe because it is so honest. i loved searose's post. i'd tried to write about farscape in my 9-21-04 journal, but it's difficult to articulate. here's the link in order to save space..... http://www.livejournal.com/users/jenlev/23170.html

ps. i keep coming back to the words 'clarity and vision'. you, searose, and others write with that...and it shows in your description of farscape. thank you again. *g*
