First, quick giggle that Marketplace just finished their segment with There Goes My Mind by the Pixies. Hee. For some reason that just killed me:) And The Pixies are going to play at Coachella this year, along with Belle and Sebastian (not together, I assume:). It should be a fantastic two days of music. If there's anything left in the bank account by May, I might have to abandon my priorities and go. Oh, and this little band from England called Radiohead is playing. Might have to check out there stuff, see if they're worth seeing. Hee.

Secondly, met up with [livejournal.com profile] sabine101 for Tom McRae and Jude last night (and [livejournal.com profile] suelac, thank you so much for passing along my cell. I was totally remiss on that!) But thankfully, she is a clever, resourceful girl! And optimistic. Hotel Cafe is itty bitty, and were at capacity. It looked doubtful that we were going to get in but Sab had faith. I had really tall boots, so my faith was slightly overshadowed by the prospect of standing in the alleyway in said tall boots. Inside would have been quite another matter, but height saved the day as three petite girls went in to the club and came right back out because they couldn't see, and then we whisked our way inside.

Saw half of Tom McRae's set. He was lovely, such a sweet, haunting voice, and sounded exactly like he does on the CD, played a simply gorgeous new song, and I believe at one point I saw the top half of his face. It was a tad crowded in there. I'll be going back to catch his whole set at some point. And then we weaseled, sweetly of course, our way forward and managed to get right up front. Met a very nice couple who had flown from Florida to catch Jude's set, and were flying back the next morning. That's devotion, but Jude's fan base is nothing if not devoted.

And he was just beyond fantastic, funny, flippant, snarky, adorable, full of energy and played for almost two hours. He forgot the words, made new ones up as he went, did a great combination of songs, took requests, recognized the Florida couple, and was just a treat. I almost forgot how much my feet hurt:) And I think I fell in love with his bassist:) And at one point a friend of Jude's came up on stage to sing harmony with the bassist, and they were mm, so yummy together. It was just one of those shows where you absolutely feel the experience, which sounds really touchy feely, but I mean that you laugh, and feel tears forming, get warm and tight in your belly, sway and sing and giggle and breath and it's just what music, especially live music is supposed to do. Especially live music with beer:)

Overall, it was a great night, a treat to see [livejournal.com profile] sabine101 again, amazing music, and needless to say I have my flower shoes on today as my feet are still bitching at me:)

Sigh. We wants to see Jude again, precious.

Tom McRae wouldn't be too shabby, either.

And that feeling with Jude? I know so very exactly what you mean. I've felt it with him - and with Neil Finn and Damien Rice. So. Yeah.

So clearly, you need to drive down in March for his next show:)

And yeah, I loved the CD's, but he was just amazing live.

If I buy a Tom McRae CD, do you have a recommendation on what's good to start with? The only song of his I know is 'Karaoke Soul'.

Also, congratulations! I haven't finished going through the Sparky, but you won Best New Author. And several of your stories made it into the top three of several categories. I'm so happy for you!
Squee!

Karaoke Soul is off his second album, Just Like Blood, which is faaaaabulous and has a "lighter" tone than his debut self-titled album. But, I would suggest going with his first, if only for the plethora of amazingly haunting songs (that is not to say that JLB isn't also haunting, it's just... yeah, you'll see -- it's all poetry, anyway *g*).

Hmm. You know, I don't quite agree that Just Like Blood is lighter. For me, it's more polished. I like the self-titled album, like many of the songs, but I also think Just Like Blood works much better as a whole. It feels less like a collection of songs:)

But, you can't go wrong either way.

Oh thank you!! Mostly it makes me blush and scratch my head. And congratulations yourself:)

(And I'd say buy Just Like Blood, although it's an import so you may have to get it online if you don't have a good music store nearby). I'd also highly reccoment Jude's No One is Really Beautiful if you're in a music buying mode. It's just so good.
