So, for the techno savvy out there, if I'm doing a PowerPoint presentation on a Macintosh, will it be transferable to a PC? I'm doing a presentation for a client, terrifying enough because I haven't done one in ages, but she'll pay me very well and I really like her and want to help, so this question is making me a tad nervous. Also, any hints for snazzy presentations?

Taught dance last night, which went well. I'm so much more sore when I teach then when I take class. Go figure. I'm auditioning, I think, on Sunday for a chance to dance in a competition, which is beyond fucked up because I won't win the competition (this isn't false modesty, I really won't - I'm not in the same league as some of the other dancers, as well as being too tall and too All Scandanavian All the Time), but it's a chance to dance in a really nice club, on a really nice stage and it's something I should do but am incredibly nervous, despite dancing professionally frequently, because it's by myself, and watch me try and talk myself out of this.

So I'm a little stuck, a little uncertain, I guess, of how I look, of how I dance, of what the hell I'm doing. Hmmm.

Very tempted to buy the Firefly DVD's. I saw about half the series, well probably more like 3/4, and loved a lot of it, and didn't connect particularly with the characters, which is, for me, typical of a Joss Whedon show. Love it, respect it, don't feel fannish - actively fannish- about it. But I do think it got a short shrift, and I would like to see the episodes I missed. And okay, so I was fond of Jayne. Very fond of Jayne:)

Am really loving my Farscape Season 1 DVD's as well. It's just so nice to have that season on DVD.

I've been listening to a lot of music lately, trying to read as much as I can, listen to as much as I can, get lost in those things, as lost as I am in the sea of junk that is my house, books piled over all the surfaces, CD's scattered hither and yon. It's winter and while the sun is bright and shining here, I still want to crawl inside, pull my house around me like a blanket and tune out the light. I need change, need to enact change, but I don't know where to start.

Oh, [livejournal.com profile] crankygrrl, good luck today. I hope everything turns out to be okay!

And that seems to conclude today's ramble.

yes, you can cross-platform with PowerPoint... just don't make it too fancy or else one platform or the other might be missing the fonts/backgrounds you want to use.

How fancy do you want to get? Heheheheheh.

I personally detest animations in presentations. They are annoying and you can't guarantee that they will always work. Though, the fancy kinds fly-ins and outs to the next slide (or transitions) are kinda neat.

If you use a background image that's all your own and not part of the Power POint package, make sure you have a copy of it WITH the presentation file. Nothing like showing up to a meeting and your background has now turned white on you.

Backgrounds should be subtle.. not sharp in boundaries or anything like that, and not busy so that the people can't read what's on the slide

I also personally detest text slides (despite the fact that I use them ALL THE TIME) for my class. But that's just me.

Want more help, email me and I can talk you through it

What Cretkid said (although re: animated transitions -- BLEARGH. If you've seen more than one PPt presentation, you've seen these transitions far more than you care to. Bloody timewasters if they're overused). Also:

- Make sure you have the .ppt extension on your file so the PC knows what it is.

- Don't cram a slide with text or graphics or anything.

- Don't read out your slides. They should support what you're saying, not define it. People can read. (I am sure you know this, but I thought it bore repeating...)

Good luck! let us know how it goes!

Thank you!! It's been ages since I've done this and I so don't want to screw up!

I'm sure you'll do great!

I forgot to say, I don't know what the setup is where you will be doing the presentation, but if you can run through it quickly beforehand on the computer you'll be using, that will probably help a lot -- you'll be reassured that it works, and it will be a last-minute check for anything you might have missed.

Oh, and see if you can find out what version of PowerPoint the presentation computer has -- just in case it's screwy and old, you'll want to know in advance.

That's an excellent suggestion. I doubt I'll be at the presentation itself, but knowing how old the computer is could help tremendously!!

Ah! I get it -- you create, she presents. (Sorry, me slow some days.)

Excellent, that means you can spend more time on parallelism and less time fretting about what you're going to say.

Yeah, I don't have to do anything but put the presentation together (she normally has a grad student that does this for her, but he's unavailable and I spend about five hours a week getting her kids through their language classes:)

I only have to modify small pieces of her text into presentation format to accompany pictures and highlight her points. I wish I could be at the actual presentation, though.

Oy, I'm so taking you up on the offer to talk me through it. The presentation is on human rights violations and accompanies a lecture so it's mostly tiny bits of text - stats, bullet points, etc, with images. Nothing fancy, but I need it to flow. I will also need all of the hand holding I can get so thank you so much for the offer!

no problemo!

and electricland is right about the slide transitions too... they do get carried away

I tend to like things clean and clear and simple, so I'm probably safe from the lure of fluffy transitions:)

I just picked up the Firefly DVDs at SunCoast for $35. I particularly liked the last ep (unaired). I'd only seen one full ep and about 5 minutes of two different eps, so it was fun to watch all of them in order and meet the characters.

Yeah, I really like the idea of seeing them in order and seeing the eps I haven't seen. FOX really did the series a disservice, I think. And it's getting to the point where I mostly just want to watch TV on DVD anyway:) I got the Homicide DVD's based on word of mouth and was very happy with them:)

My kids bought me (in my husband's name) the Firefly DVDs for Christmas. I've watched several, but I've not done the 12 hour marathon viewing that I did when I purchased the first 3 Farscape DVDs (6 eps plus commentaries and extras and more extras). I can handle about 2 episodes at a time. I've read LJ comments that the Firefly commentaries are wonderful, especially Nathan Fillion's -- haven't viewed them yet, so can't speak personally.

I have watched at least one of the episodes I missed - the one where "Captain Tightpants" is first mentioned. It is a delightful episode (whose name is completely gone).

You know - I'll take a risk here. Once I'm done viewing them, I'd be happy to share them with you as long as you promise to return them!

You are a dear, and I appreciate the offer more than I can say. But I'm the world's worst returner of things:( I honestly can't be trusted to send things back through the mail. I have stuff for Cranky from the con in November that she is still waiting for, including the tape of Battlestar Gallactica that never got mailed and then aired in Canada before I could send it:)

However, thank you so much for the lovely offer. You still get smacking virtual kisses:)

And I know what you mean about the marathon:) When I get a new FS DVD, I have to make sure that the house is empty so I can curl up and watch it. I spent about five hours with the Season 1 DVD's when I got them a few weeks ago, and it's not like I haven't seen these episodes multiple times:)

True but I'm a hopeless braincase and one half of the tape will still be new to me. =]

And thanks for the good wishes. Nothing to report, which I have decided to take as good news...

Merci beaucoup.

As for the ultrasound, which is pretty much like being smothered in ketchup while being felt up by a rubber freak, it is meant to be a formality. On the remote chance they do find something cancerous 8s I will be very surprised. Still, it's not the most relaxing month of my life...and the sooner over and behind me, the better. =]

Absolutely! This kind of stress isn't good for you, whether or not they find anything seriously wrong. Bodies don't process stress well! Take it easy this weekend.

And as an antidote, may I suggest swinging by Feldman's LJ. She's writing semi bad, but not really, and yet still strangely hot (because it's Feldman and the line is a thin one) voyeuristic threesome smut fic. It's making my afternoon.

I'm writing an epilogue. Actually, I'm thinking about an epilogue and erasing a lot of words from my screen after whimpering - Not What I Want -at it.:)

Oh, did you get Firefly pre-empted during the '02 World Series playoffs too? That was so maddening -- I think they cut it for Angels games something like five weeks in a row.

And talk about your insult to injury -- not only did they pre-empt the show, ruin its ratings, and cancel it, but my team lost the series to the mofo Angels. Grr. *g*

Good luck with the audition! No matter what the competition outcome is, I'm sure you'll be glad that you got the opportunity to broaden your sphere and do fun new things. After all, I'm guessing you dance for the experience and the enjoyment, and the club sounds fun. :)

Oh yeah, pre-empted, knocked about, then forgotten as the only two things I've ever consistently been able to remember to tape were X-Files and Farscape:) After the first few episodes, I generally enjoyed what I saw and really adored a couple of the episodes.

I sense a little bitterness about last year's series:)

Thanks for the well wishes. I dance as part of a troupe, and as a soloist, but I'm much, much more comfortable as part of a troupe, and this would definitely be a whole new level of performance in this particular art form. Me on the stage by myself terrifies me far more than me by myself in a restaurant:) But yeah, if I can get up my nerve, it should be fun.

Good luck with presentation.
Don't overstress about audition. Just try to enjoy yourself and let that feeling show.
Buy Firefly DVDs.

I bought a CD of someone I heard performing over NPR, Cuckoo Land by Robert Wyatt. Hope I like the rest of it as much as I liked the excerpts.
