Brief thoughts on Angel and on Farscape.

Angel, Sacrifice and Farscape, A Bug's Life and WSS:FA

Last night's Angel finally satisfied me. I've been watching the past two seasons with a kind of myeah, whatever attitude. I didn't care about scruffy Wesley, mostly because I thought the reactions to him taking Connor, except for Angel's, were ridiculously written and out of character. And while I like Alexis Denisof, I don't find him particularly sexy. I liked geeky Wesley better. I also disliked Cordelia, and thought the C/A stuff totally pointless and lacking in chemistry. This season has had a better rhythm. It was fun to see the darkness appearing in these characters, and we got Faith back. Still, every time someone was talking for more than a minute, I zoned out. Also, I'm sorry, I know that for most Angelenos this is gonna come as a blow, but we are not the only people on earth. If the sun goes out, pretty much it goes out everywhere. And the end of the world, well, it happens pretty quick. That made me crazy. Absolutely bat-shit crazy.

Last night's ep, though, had a tight, claustrophobic feel which is what I loved about the early series. Running away from the sunshine, leaving your heart behind. The spider guys were scary and creepy, and blood magic is the oldest magic, although weaving a literal flesh spell was big time disgusting. The importance of names, how cultures have names that can't be said because of the power that weilds. The characters remained in character, and Wesley used his brain to figure out what was going on. Also, they made me think that Cordelia has been assimilated. Yeah to that. I don't have a lot of in depth analysis to report. I don't know if it was a tighter script, better direction, cool creepy clicky hissy spiders, or David Boreanaz finally remembering them sending him to acting school, but I thoroughly enjoyed myself.

A love A Bug's Life. Leather, hotness, and pulled in two directions Aeryn who's reacting (in those beautifully infintisemal ways that she does) all over the place to the lure of a hottie PK and the life he can give back to her. It's the last time Aeryn will be offered that dream. I love my girl because you can see the desire, the yearning, and you know she'll never give in. Aeryn is always about duty first.

More importantly, it is John's first act of pure violence and one he can never live down. Yes, he was inhabited by the virus, but the truth is it didn't matter. His hand weilded that pipe. He killed that woman, and he could do it because he was capable of it. The hints of violence we have seen in John rise to the surface and it's not even his choice.

The moment is echoed beautifully in WSS:FA. When John, wearing the PK uniform, sees Aeryn strapped down, helpless, he turns and hits the PK medical worker. One stroke, one act of violence and he never even flinches. He can't anymore. There will be no mourning for that act, and there he is, again misrepresenting himself as a PK killer, but this time, he's barely acting.

So beautifully done. I hate you SciFi, I really really do.

I would like to talk about the ridiculousness of the President's proposed tax cuts. I'd like to talk about the looting in Iraq, which seems to be generating more horror than the bombs dropped, or any of the world's events. Yesterday on Fresh Air, Jonathan Schell was talking about why non-violent solutions are a more practical approach to conflict in this day and age. It's very interesting, and based in really well-researched history. He talks about the League of Nations, the UN and the failures of both. But I'm sleepy. It's sunny outside, and I'm wearing sexy shoes that I keep getting distracted by. So I'll leave the world alone for today.
