My mother e-mailed to inform me that it's National Literature Day. (I'm assuming it's the final day of February, and not the 29th of February, because that would just be sad to only celebrate literature every four years).

She also asked if I remembered who I dressed up as in 4th grade in celebration of this day. I drew a blank, not remembering dressing up for school aside from Halloween. She said I was Meg March, and I do remember that, although I think it was for Halloween. I have to say, in my defense of dressing up as Meg and not Jo (although, writing aside, I was far more like Meg - practical, precise, feminine, responsible) it was because I had this beautifully illustrated copy of Little Women which showed Meg in this gorgeous gray silk dress for the party when she goes away and pretends to be someone else and I adored it and had this old grey cocktail dress of my mother's that I must have worn in imitation. Or maybe, even then, I feared self-identifying too much with Jo, or was simply angry with her for marrying Mr. Baer, which I never understood!! How could she have not married Laurie?!!!

Anyway, if you were going to masquerade today as a character from literature who would you be and why? Today, I want to be one of Gibson's cyberpunk girls. I've got the hair, and I'm still a little pissy and sharp, but I'm giggling again, and I've got a great Japanese inspired t-shirt and want to prove my kung fu is the best.

As this news came from my mother, I'd consider it not... suspect but possibly not entirely accurate:)

And I loved Little Women, and many of the traditional girl classics. And I never, ever understood why Jo wanted to marry someone a zillion years older than her. Plus, the section where they correspond may have started my hate on for epistolatory literature.
