Best USA's Birthday Ever
Jul. 4th, 2007 09:48 pmSeriously, this ranks up there as one of my favorite 4ths.
Slept a zillion hours with absolutely nothing pressing on the horizon for the day.
Went on a surprise adventure to Burbank, with coffee. (Are we going to Ikea? No. Are we going to the Hilton (no longer a Hilton, but a Marriot. Sacrilege)? No. Are we going to the airport? No.)
When we, in fact, pulled up to the Kwik-E-Mart, I did not, in fact, register at first that it was strange. And then I looked harder. And then I started squealing like a four year old on a sugar high. Because dude...
KWIK-E-MART.

Seriously, I must have been in a cave the last week or so because I had no idea this was going on. Which made it even better. The boxes of Krusty-O's and the Buzz Cola were long gone, but the old guy was in the freezer, and the guy answering the door was wearing a turban, and we stood in line for squishees (I actually got a squishee and not just the cup and it was sort of disgusting but I believe that was my fault as I should have just gotten normal slurpee flavor but it was blue and slurpees are not, so it was fitting.)
Then there was lunch, and an aborted movie attempt, and the farmer's market.
Then, upon arriving home, I discovered that
iamsab and
projectjulie were in fact not very far away, writing at a coffeeshop so I went and met them and there was writing and then sushi and then cold sake and now I'm sitting on my couch with a gin and tonic and a bunch of Scrubs and well, Happy Birthday America.
It's been a great day, despite the heat. The fact that the US is about to air not 1 but 2 shows about people trying to remember the words to songs cannot, in fact, dissuade me from happiness about this place. (I mean us as a culture - crazed and creative and independent and stupid and passionate and taking things for granted. I don't mean our current government, our current politicians. I mean us - weird and funny and bright and self-centered and generous and determined. I mean all of us, living here, living these ideals, fucking up these ideals, but trying to live them how we can.)

Date: 2007-07-05 07:26 am (UTC)Ahem. Anyway, as I can't visit a Kwik-E-Mart, I'm very pleased that you were able to do so.
