Question from the moron in the front row #1 (meaning me, who is currently baffled):

My Yahoo mail (the one connected to this LJ, and that I use for fannish activities) won't connect. My server says the connection is refused. However, my regular Yahoo e-mail for "real" life is fine. Thoughts? Suggestions? Ways I can keep from screaming at the computer?

Question #2 (now in real time):

A friend of mine is giving a presentation on women in technology and I know that several of the people on my flist are, in fact, women in technology. Do you know of any good literature (meaning essays, studies, whatever) talking about women's experience working in the tech field?

Thanks!!!

Oh! YES!! on the last point.

I'll email you my review of the book I'd recommend - Technology with Curves. The books a few years old now, but very cool.

I have other stuff, too. Lemme see if I can find the biblios ;). This was a key part of my diss stuff.

I just finished reading a collection of essays called She's Such a Geek, which was pretty good, though perhaps not as robust as it could have been. The geekery included technology, science, computer gaming, and fandom. The essays were just a few pages each, mostly women talking about growing up geeky and the various challenges they've faced academically, professionally, and socially as women and as geeks.

Thank you. That sounds fascinating.

It was fun. A little light, for my taste, and I had the sense that most of the women were responding to the same list of questions, which created a bit of sameness from essay to essay. But there was a reasonable amount of diversity among the women themselves, across age, sexuality, race, and ability, which was quite refreshing.

[friendsurfin' themonkeycabal] in case you want to include women as early pioneers... Don't Forget Gracie (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grace_Hopper)
among the links:
along with all the other greats in technology, her place at the base of the pillar shouldn't be underestimated, because much of modern technology rests on computing... cheers, AFD

I have no clue how to help with your first question.

As for Q2, I think [livejournal.com profile] scorpy808 would be great for this. I'll point her in your direction.

Question #1: have you tried clearing out your cookies and cache in your browser? Try doing that, closing out the browser completely, and opening a new window.

I did all that. Still didn't work. And then, just when I panicked and set up a gmail account, it decided to work.

Rolls eyes and mystifying technology.

Thank you though!!

Unfortunately, while I actually am a women working in technology, and personally know lots of other women who work in technology, I have absolutely no knowledge of literature on same. Huh.

But speaking of technology, I see that you're able to connect to your mail now; it was likely that there was some problem connecting to the specific server or server cluster where your mail for that one account lives, which is why you could connect to one account but not the other. It's not you, it's them.

Yes, ditto. This is me as well :) Except, I know some women in technology, ie, college cohorts that I keep up with on lj, or grad school cohorts that I know are out there somewhere, but in my day to day life, I don't talk with other tech-ie women all that much. I'm in network security. I've already been mistaken for administrative staff at work once.
