More on Writing in This Year and Last
Jan. 8th, 2007 11:03 amI'm still somewhere between startled and appalled at the number of stories I wrote last year considering I didn't think I'd written anything.
I wrote a lot of drabbles, a lot of off the cuff stuff with no research, little thought, and clearly no sense of spelling or grammar. Gah, I resolve for the new year to do an editor's read through on my stuff before posting, but I'm really word blind when reading my own stuff. It's so easy to see what should be there instead of what really is there.
I wouldn't say I challenged myself this year, but I will say that I enjoyed what I wrote for the most part.
So, to summarize and qualify the list:
Favorite story I wrote this year: My Heroes Have Always Been Cowboys. This is the Cam/Vala bookstore porn. I have no excuses, and apparently no shame either:)
Best story I wrote this year: Tit for Tat, the Remix fic. It's Farscape S1, and I feel like I explored stuff I never would have explored without the Remix challenge. I also feel like it's solid storytelling and I surprised myself and I had to completely rely on other people to get me to the point where I felt like I could write this.
Most underappreciated story, IMO: Probably Hole in the Wall, the
uncharted_elves story. I like this story, like the grittiness and the absurdity and it's H/C, sort of and I just liked some of the themes and the aggression.
Sexiest story: Hmmm. Probably still My Heroes Have Always Been Cowboys because bookstore. Sex. But I am also really, really fond of the porn in Three Card Monte Can Only End in Tears because there was ice cream and dog tags.
Most fun story: Totally a tie between the crackfic for
cofax7's Birthday (SG-1/FS crossover) or the crackfic for
rubberneck's birthday. The collaboration with other writer's was just a joy and we did some beautifully ridiculous things in these stories and I still feel like they work as stories.
Holy crap, that's wrong: I wrote Veronica/Lamb for someone. That's pretty wrong:) I also wrote a Sheppard/Vala/Mitchell story, which I don't think was terribly wrong:) What's wrong is that there isn't more out there for this threesome:)
Story that shifted my own perceptions of the characters: I'm pretty sure that none of my stories shifted my perception of the characters. I would say that writing Cam/Vala porn made me look at what was driving them (in my head vs. on screen), and I found a slew of things that I liked, but my perceptions of the characters have to be pretty fixed in order for me to care enough to write them. I did grow to appreciate Inara far more after writing "Treading on the Toes of a Grimm Reality."
Hardest story to write: Tit for Tat, absolutely.
Biggest disappointment: That I didn't challenge myself more, I think. That I started so many stories that I didn't finish. I've got paragraphs and snippets quite literally littering my harddrive.
Biggest surprise: Probably the Logan/Veronica I wrote for Kath. Or the Sharon/Starbuck that I wrote for
riarambles that I don't remember writing.
Most unintentionally *telling* story: Any of the SG-1 stories set in Colorado Springs. I didn't intend to be working out my issues/nostalgia with my hometown through writing smut.
A story I want remembered: I'm selfish. I want all of my stories remembered, or at least remembered fondly. But if I had to chose one, I'm not sure what I'd pick. There are things I like from many of them, and I guess I'd just rather have people remember the things I do well and forgive me for the things I do poorly overall.
I wrote 1400 words on the NIP yesterday, 1200 the day before and am giddy with progress. (I'd be more giddy if I didn't know that half of the 1400 will have to be rewritten to not sound like some awful cliched hero/bad guy showdown, but it's progress and I hit a cool character moment and I worked out a lot of the plot in my head).
And, as a reward to myself, I'd like to write some angst free fic. I'm willing to take pairing suggestions!!!

Date: 2007-01-09 05:19 am (UTC)Pairings: Cam and Aeryn, TF, maybe him just showing her something fun like Disneyland, or each others ships, like a moment out of time. She had so little fun there.
I've read your other Cam and Aeryn and loved that too.
