Weekend Update
Aug. 21st, 2006 12:38 pmFirst of all, in the most important news, the Seamonkey is finally, finally here!! Congrats to
rubberneck and Mr.F!! The newest addition to the Hussy clan (as
fbf says, Hussy v. 2.0) is a beautiful, beautiful girl. (And while we would have loved her muchly as a boy, it's so nice that she's a girl because we've had both her hussy name and her hussy onesie made since forever!! Welcome to the world, Squirmy!!)
I learned this weekend as well that if you wrangle pre-mentsral boobs into a belly-dance costume for nearly five hours straight, there will be a revolution at the end of the night. I'm surprised that they didn't start chanting for Che by the time I took off my costume.
I continue to love the DVR more than is righteous and pure (and well it is not a TiVo, it is a Moxi so it's still got a cool name and it is just... yeah, it's love.) It also, happily, recorded both the Special on "200" and the ep itself.
Things I learned:
* Do not give the Canadians the crack. They are a practical people and will use it!!
* The SG-1 actors are so very Canadian sounding when they are themselves and not their characters and I found this weirdly charming for some reason:)
* I could probably not adore Ben Browder any more than I already do. Really. I've reached maximum capacity. (Which is why it's best to take all knowledge of actors and creative types directly from their work and their discussion of their work because then you never have to know messy personal information that will inevitably harsh the squee. And seriously, I'd be heartbroken to have my squee harshed when it comes to BB).
Onto 200 itself:
I obviously missed a lot of the long-standing refs, but I don't feel like I missed the meta on this, nor the real joy of offering up this sort of ep to the creators or the fans. It was a lovely gesture folks, and you all did good.
The meta, oooh, lava thick in this, from the deliberate to the subtle, because really, Vala as Dorothy is not as off as it sounds. She does get throne into another place, not of her choosing and has to find a way to make do. She is looking for something, and what that something is becomes clearer and clearer to her as she goes. (I love her adaptability, the way that when she first came through the gate, sexy space pirate seemed the way to go, and now she's sort of shifting into a slightly different persona because it's getting her more of what she needs and wants. I love that she learns, and still retains that fabulous energy).
I loved Cam as zombie killer, alone. Because I don't think it's just the hero complex (although that's part of it), I think it also reflects the fact that, team leader or not, he's learning how to be part of a team and often feels like he's doing it by himself (not the work so much as the team-building. And it's not something he's particularly good at. That's gotta be a struggle for such a golden boy as well. How to react to something that isn't failure, but certainly isn't utter success).
Why oh why can't we have Teal'c PI? And hee, snarky, clever Teal'c with invisoJack was fabulous. Actually, that was one of my favorite bits. It was clever and funny and smart, as was the Who's Your Daddy? fakeout of Cam:) It was nice that they care enough to fuck with him.
The Firefly and Farscape refs (and I do think that there were more than a few of each, and not just the most obvious ones) were killer. And dude, Daniel as Crichton look all manly and vaguely constipated was hysterical. Admittedly, I had to watch the sequence on mute the first time because well... not only the sort of, gah! parody, thing, but it just... hits something, you know?
I probably laughed hardest at the Star Trek riff though because OMG Teal'c with the half undone jumpsuit and the "Why must everything on this planet inevitably explode" and Daniel knowing it was Star Trek and Mitchell as Kirk with Archer's hair and yeah:)
Puppet section (sigh, I'm the only person in the world who didn't care much for the Puppet!Angel ep - mostly because I just don't like those kind of puppets outside of Sesame Street and the Muppets. I find them representing people to be creepy. The Angel ep was totally salvaged by the Wee Little Puppet man jokes.) This just... it went on way too long for me. But the strings being cut was great.
Jack. I say yeah Jack because I know everyone else was really looking forward to his return, so yeah Jack (but dude, I felt so bad for Cam because really, knowing you were the second choice, even if the first choice hand picked you, that just sucks man. Meta or not. Cam's got enough strikes against him as leader, I just hated to see this one as well, especially when he was so excited and is such a big dork that I have no doubt he really has counted every single time he's stepped through a gate:)(On the other hand, I liked the refs throughout of how hard it is to come into a long-time show and fit in seamlessly. Because I signed on for both Ben and Claudia, I watch for them - in part out of nostalgia, in part because I'm invested in these characters they've created and more and more it's that investment driving me as I care about the other characters in relation. And I watch for Teal'c. Because dude!! Regardless, it is hard to step into an established environment and make a place for yourself without alienating everyone else or feeling alienated yourself and I like that the show is acknowledging that on a story level and a meta level).
Regardless, it was a lovely thing to have the original team (plus Walter), go through the "orifice" first. It was a nice, and fitting tribute.
The "Wormhole Xtreme" stuff was utterly biting and terribly funny, and I really, really loved the Asimov quote at the end. It gave the whole ep, the whole series and the genre really, this sense of reaching and striving, of making it more than a show and a job and a piece of media to be consumed. It validates our love for this thing in front of us, for hope and wonder and speculation and reaching. It validates the desire to always be reaching and wondering.
On a final note, if anyone wanted to make an icon of Mitchell and Vala in the fishing sequence, I would love you forever and possibly even write you fic about said fishing scene:) Because it was just too adorable for words:)
