For quite some time, I've been contemplating what to put on my left hip to balance out my lovely Bacchant on my right. I have a beautiful stylized drawing of a dragon that was always meant to be there, but I've never followed through and I finally decided that meant something. I'm just not a dragon sort of girl - it's too Eastern, too Celtic, doesn't match.

So walking into work, it occurred to me that I want something that means to me what my little Maenad means, so I decided on a muse. Now, I'm sort of anti- "The muse hit me." However, as a representation of inspiration and commitment to art, it's a pretty good symbol, and would match perfectly.

I think I've decided on Calliope since she covers most of the bases. (Erato is tempting, but too hard to explain. Melpomene and Thalia not entirely accurate). So, I'm looking for something that can be easily translated into black and white on skin. Any suggestions or imagery would be welcome.

And if you have other ideas of things that represent writing or dedication to words, I'd love to hear that as well. I'd like to have this done before my 10 year reunion. A reward to myself, I guess. A symbol. It's the one thing I believe absolutely about tatoos - the meaning has to be lasting, has to be tangible, and the moment of putting the needle on your skin has to mean something as well, and I know it's time, know I'm ready for to wear that next symbol on my body.

I like the idea of Calliope, though I wouldn't begin to know where to look for a representation.

The first thing that leapt to mind was a quill pen.

Hee - for me as well, but the prospect of having a quill tattooed on my back is less than appealing:)

No birds. I am not a fan of birds!!

Calliope is the muse of epic poetry/eloquence.

I know she is the muse ;) I was going for connections. As I said, nothing terribly useful ;).

I'd talk to the artist who did your Maedan to get something suitable- print out favorite images of calliope and see what he/she can come up with ;).

I did a Google Image search and found this:

Don't know if that's even in the ballpark of what you're after...

If you don't have a tattoo shop, I can recommend a great one in Reseda. I've had two done there, when I figure out my third one - a dragon not sure what origin - Yoni's is where I'll go. I've had no less than 20 friends go to Yoni Tattoo
