Sent the 500 words to Red. And thank you, thank you, thank you to
rubberneck for the edit and the spot on suggestions.
I am amazed, and filled with intense Mac love. This is nothing new. But I plugged the chord into my digital camera, plugged the other end into the happy blue iMac, clicked on iPhoto, clicked on import and lo and behold, my digital pictures were there. No software installation, no fumbling, futzing or swearing, just the shiny, shimmery easy of the Macintosh OS.
Show with the giant gold wings is Sunday. Wish us luck as we channel those Vegas starlets and flash back to the velociraptors.
I need to say here and for the record that California and the national media have lost their frelling minds over the death of President Reagan!!! (Notice how I say President Reagan, signaling that I have some modicum of reverence for a man who served as President, but don't get too excited I'd give the same regard to Nixon).
Apparently, the 101 is going to be literally shut down this afternoon so people can watch the hearse drive to the Reagan Library. There are signs, SIGNS, telling people not to park on the freeway!!
It upsets me, and I've tried to contain myself - this vast outpouring of love and worship for a man who was largely responsible for implementing programs I find abhorrent, for erradicating programs that I feel were essential, and for pretty much making conservatism to the mainstream and turning the middle class against the poor and the needy. We're deifying a man who uttered the desire to "Beat back the Soviet Empire" like that's normal. Like that's okay. I just am baffled and confused and feel pretty lost here today. Can we say Nicaragua and human rights abuses? Does anyone remember how to spell Iran Contra and endless blame shifting? Trickle down economics and the villification of the poor? Anyone, anyone, Bueller?
And the media? Clearly have lost all perspective. Did anyone else know that the EU was electing members of parliament this week? I didn't because it's the all dead Reagan all the time network around here! Where's my critical left wing liberal media?
Johnson's death didn't trigger a day of mourning, and hello, Civil Rights legislation? And no matter how I felt/feel about Nixon, same thing? No day off from government.
I'm angry, and I know if Reagan had been one of my heroes, I'd be more sympathetic. That's a given. But I still don't understand it, and you know what, even if it had been William Jefferson Clinton, I'm still not going to stand my ass on the street and watch a body drive by.
