Can you tell that I'm having some trouble with focus today?

This is the time of year to get Glugg at Trader Joe's for those of you who have access to TJ's.

Glugg is a weird listerine and berry flavored Scandanavian drink that you heat, mix with grain alcohol, drink quickly and see god in the stars. Hee, okay, that's only true if you double the suggested amount of vodka and drink it on an empty stomach.

However, it's good stuff, if strong in flavor and scent and can be made with red wine for a mellower punch.

I've heard tell that people make this stuff themselves (although all of my Scandanavian ancesters were far more into Tom and Jerry's than Glugg. I think it's the Norweigian influence, this seems to be more Swedish) and that family recipes are gaurded closely.

Any Northern Europeans with recipes to share?

Ewww, Glügg. *g* When visiting my Swedish in-laws in Spain a few years back, I was "treated" to it at a Christmas celebration. I was told it was some kind of hot wine, but still... yecch.

I tease my husband every year at TJs by threatening to give him a bottle of Glügg in his stocking. *g*

Hee - it's insanely addictive, much like Retsina which also has a rather vile taste and smell. The vodka sort of kills your sense of perspective, but you can't let it cool off:)

my mother (born and raised in Sweden) has yet to divulge her glugg recipe, that was handed down from her mormor (mother's mother). It's not like most mulled wines - it's heavy, and has ale in it, and is probably like the mead that Beowulf and his men drank after killing Grendel!

I prefer the mix from IKEA (I think it's the same as TJ's)

God Jul (Merry Christmas)

I can't seem to put my hands on our family recipe (it may have been lost in the Great Computer Crash of 2003), but here's one from Hemslöjd:

Swedish Glögg (Vinglögg)
  • 6 3/4 C Burgundy (15 dl)
  • 3 1/4 C Port Wine (7.5 dl)
  • 2 1/2 C Vodka (6 dl)
  • 7/8 C Whisky
  • 1 T Whole Clove
  • 1/2 tsp Whole Cardamom
  • 3 pieces stick cinnamon
  • Rind from 2 oranges (washed)
  • 1 1/4 C Sugar
Mix the ingredients together in a large crock pot and simmer (do not boil) for approximately 4 hours.

(Hemslöjd also offers a complete spice packet you can use in place of the loose spices listed in the recipe above.)
