Catharsis acheived
Nov. 15th, 2004 12:39 pmI feel much better now, after spewing out all of my frustration with my weekend.
In part, this is because the fabulous
haphazardmethod has found pink fur boots that are calling out my name in the heart of Topanga and the thought alone makes me giddy.
And because I got to see in person, the fabulous cards made by
ropo and got a book mark out of it!!
Also, because it is ridiculously gorgeous in Southern California today, and because I'm wearing bright purple fishnet tights which I adore.
And am listening to Vienna Teng, thanks to the general recc of LJ, although Amoeba failed me and does not have her in stock. It was a sad, sad day and I'll have to order the CD's, but I discovered this after going to see Finding Neverland at the ArcLight. The movie was beautiful, skilled and sad and warm and made me cry.
I know that I should not justify buying the Starburst editions of Farscape by saying I can give my DVDs to my dad. This does not mean I'm not sorely tempted! Or that I'm not tempted to say fuck it and buy the iBook G4 because it's now less than $1000. Keep in mind, when I say buy, I mean extend myself further into debt in order to facilitate my love of material culture that completely countermines my revolutionary tendencies. Opus said it very well yesterady. I want to be a liberal, but I may not want to be accountable so much. Not if it means giving up my iPod. Not really true, but worth thinking about. The ghetto plasticar of license plate lateness is not a lifestyle choice, it's a "I have no other choice."
My own cat makes me ridiculously happy, despite ruining $20 Donna Karan tights that I'd owned for all of three hours before he slid off my lap, and latched onto my leg in surprise. He's got ears like a fox, slicks them back with this wild look in his eyes, and is the words best snuggler. And he moved my water bottle all over my room trying to get at the ice cubes inside. He's pretty, but not so bright. Ah well, I will love him and hug him and call him George.
the_sporkys have started to receive the names of the fic being nominated for NC-17 categories in The Sparkys. This makes me giggle and giggle. We'll be good, and we'll be professional but it just makes me grin because I have in my head the conversation with Cranky that lead to this community, and the phrase, "It'll be the Booker Prize of smut." So, yeah for that.
Hmm. That seems to be all.
Oh, and
crankygrrl is looking for people to donate parts of her ass to. I know there are people out there suffering from noassatall, so go forth and bid on Cranky's:) Help fund her trip to So Cal.
Oh, and since I'm a week behind, and I liked this meme, although I'm not sure how well it applies to me:
This is the problem with LJ: we all think we are so close, but in actuality we know nothing about each other. I'm going to rectify it. I want you to ask me something you think you should know about me. Something that should be obvious, but you have no idea about. Ask away.
Then post this in your LJ and find out what people don't know about you.

Date: 2004-11-15 08:54 pm (UTC)i love your description of your cat: with ears like that he sounds a bit like a maine coon cat? i had a maine coon cat who used to try to get at the mice in this old house (1790) i lived in when i got out of college. he'd follow the sounds along the wall and then leap at it. heh. silly cat.
enjoy the boots and the day; and have fun next weekend...er, you are going to burbank?
ps. your icon has caused me to crack a rib laughing....well it sure feels that way. ;)
as for the meme, when and what was the first fanfiction you wrote? *g*

Date: 2004-11-15 09:06 pm (UTC)Hee - I love that icon. Courtesy of the fabulous Feldman.
And first fanfic, hmm. Well, when I was 13 I wrote a story incorporating a variety of characters from but not limited to Remington Steele, Young Sherlock Holmes and several Elizabeth Peters books. It was complete and total wish fullfillment.
Hee - first series attempt at fic? Latitude and Longitude which I posted a year and a half ago:)

Date: 2004-11-15 09:27 pm (UTC)i can see how elizabeth peters books would lend themselves to fic...lots of potential stories and great characters. as for remmington steele; frell pierce brosnan was *very* fine in that show. *veg*
yeah wonderful and funny icons. i appreciate them more and more.:)

Date: 2004-11-15 09:32 pm (UTC)I have a lifesize cardboard cutout of Pierce Brosnan as James Bond. (It was not my idea, my best friend brought him to the airport to pick me up with a rose tied to his hand. It was sort of hysterical and humiliating in equal measures:) And, mmm, he was (and is) so very pretty.

ps. i do have a life size cardboard cut out of yoda with a light sabre in my office. when my boss saw him she started singing "yoda, y.o.d.a., yoda" to the tune of "lola". tee hee!

Date: 2004-11-15 09:52 pm (UTC)Not that we need to share the eventual rating system, but we should *definitely* let folks know that we're in this for good smut no matter who writes it.
No matter how many judges any particular story gets, we just devide by the number of judges to obtain a same-scale score for all.

Date: 2004-11-15 10:31 pm (UTC)Um, but just for clarification, you do realize we're sharing the development of the ratings system right here, right now, right? Hee.
No matter how many judges any particular story gets, we just devide by the number of judges to obtain a same-scale score for all.
Yeah. I think we start with simply the scoring system, and then if there are ties, or special cases to be pleaded, we discuss as a group.

Date: 2004-11-15 09:38 pm (UTC)Set-up: for plot-fics, how does the sex fit into the context of the story; for PWP, location and mise-en-place of the scene itself
Originality: standard porn "oil&lube" checklist vs. inventiveness
Characterization: adherence to recognizable characters--i.e., shmoopy John is more believable than shmoopy Aeryn
Daring: exploration of character, in other words, the selling of extreme characterization
Storytelling: does the scene/story show us something new or interesting about the characters (or could it be replaced with "then they had sex")
And, of course, general hotness.

Date: 2004-11-15 09:44 pm (UTC)Also, because I'm a pedant, I think there should be a score for grammar and spelling. I don't care how great the story is, if the actual writing craft is poor, it makes for a lousy read.
What about:
2 pts for spelling and grammar
2 pts for characterization
2 pts for general hotness/pornaliciousness
and one point each for set-up/plot, originality, inventiveness (or is that the same thing?), and daring?

Date: 2004-11-15 09:58 pm (UTC)I think each aspect should have more than 2 points, though, because that only allows:
0=bad/nonexistent
1=decent
2=outstanding!
I suggest a 5 point scale:
0=nonexistent
1=an attempt was made
2=decently done
3=good job
4=above average
5=outstanding!
