While I realize that it is unfair to blame M. for the cable being shut off, because yes, I too can open the bills, we've established a system over the last five years. Because I am almost always at work, or rehearsal, or whatever, and because all the bills are in his name, he pays them, I give him the money once a month.

That this system has broken down on numerous occasions should have persuaded me to abandon it, open the bills when they come in, write out my half, and deposit them in plain sight. I, clearly, am more of a dumb ass than M. because I don't do this. I give him the check every month, and pretend everything's fine. Problem is, he doesn't always pay the bills. Oh, he doesn't spend the money, but he doesn't actually pay the bills either.

Too make this shorter, the cable got shut off and there was no Angel or West Wing for me. I was less than thrilled, especially after having spent the evening with 14 year olds baffled that taking notes off the internet did not equal taking their own notes from the textbook.

And then there was the unpleasant incident in which M. offered me $3 to go buy a VCR tape and ask one of our friends to tape Angel because he wanted to see it too. This does not rival the great gas shut offs of 2002 - when I told him not to come home until they turned the gas back on and then I had to go shower at a friend's - , but it annoys me. We've been doing well lately, bills in on time, full up, no weird lapses.

I don't know if there are any other Jude fans out there - although I know [livejournal.com profile] shaye is fond of No One is Really Beautiful, and really, if you don't have this album, you should. He has a new, non-commercial album out called Sarah. You can buy it here. I haven't heard it yet, but will probably buy it next week when we go see him and Tom McRae at Hotel Cafe. There are reasons I love this city. This is one of them (or two of them, I should say:)

Hee, editing is progressing much more swiftly now. And, hopefully, [livejournal.com profile] suelac who is trying to instill the skills of world building in me instead of my normal but this is how I see it so it's clear to everyone approach, will appreciate this. Sitting in the bathtub last night, reading Night Watch, I sat up and said, "I don't want it to be the size of the White House, I want it to be the size of the Pentagon. Is the Pentagon that big? I want it to be really, really big!!" (It being the palace compound from LATP:) So while my world building is maybe not so detail oriented, at least it's being pushed in the right direction.

Also, those of you, and you are legion, who have read more Pratchett than I have, can you give me some reccs? I loved Good Omens, giggled through Wyrd Sisters, and have really, really been loving Night Watch. So what should I read next?

Oh, also, [livejournal.com profile] themonkeycabal has promised a pretty hat to anyone who can put "I'm a controlling, glory hogging, thunder stealing, fascist dictator" on an icon for her. I know there have to be takers out there up to the challenge:) I think Red probably needs something to make her giggle right about now:)

It is indeed, but I say take the Witches books in order -- therefore, Witches Abroad next.

I'm also entirely fond of Reaper Man (hell, I'm fond of 'em all, what can I say?). You could start the Guards books in order too: Guards, Guards, then Men at Arms, etc.

Handy reading order guides here.

Pathetic, isn't it? We're so married.

However, the reason I told him not to come home was that I didn't think I keep myself from throwing things at him. I'd already launched all of my tax forms and the phone across the room.

My greatest wish is for him to find a girlfriend. This rivals even my desire for non M. related male companionship!

Yes, yes, yes!! They don't do reservations, unfortunately (which means we have no tickets, but much enthusiasm), but it is next Tuesday (2/17 and I think it starts at 7 or 8!!

Here's all the info: <a href="http://www.hotelcafe.com>Hotel Cafe</a> !! It would be lovely to see you, and I'm sure the show will be wonderful!!

Have you heard Jude's King of Yesterday? I didn't hear any of it except what he played when he opened for Dido (back before she was insanely popular). There was one song about moving to Cuba that I found particularly charming.

Also, I saw him after class one time at an in-store performance in, oh, 1999 or so. I was so CLOSE to him (though not as close I as would be to Neil Finn at another in-store last year) and when he sang "Brad and Suzy" he practically molested that microphone. GOD it was sexy.

I find it sad that he had two or three really big songs off of No One is Really Beautiful and then...nothing national at all. *sheds a tear*

He's such a cutie:) And I've never seen him live!!

I have King of Yesterday, and there are a couple of songs I like, but mostly (and he says this), it's kind of a throwaway.

He was working on a different album and his label insisted on something more commercial, so he pumped out the album, then spent the last couple of years fighting his way out of his contract. I'm seriously hoping that this album is more like No One.... I adore that album, and listen to it obsessively when I pull it out:)

Plus, the inside artwork made a guitar case seem sexy. How is that even possible?

Does KoY have the Cuba song on it? I may just try to find that one to DL.

Labels SUCK.

You know, I don't remember a Cuba song on KoY.

I've got it in the stack next to my desk though. I'll pop it in and give it a listen:)

"I don't want it to be the size of the White House, I want it to be the size of the Pentagon. Is the Pentagon that big? I want it to be really, really big!!"

Well, that makes sense to me. It's the government center for an entire system of planets. It should be huge. Thousands and thousands of rooms, tens of thousands of staff. Maybe a special wing/room/quarter for the Royal Family's quarters, and another for actual government stuff, and another for the military stuff? Quarters for the staff, kitchens, and so forth?

Go you with the world-building! I shall dive back into beta tonight, god willing and the creeks don't rise.

Oddly enough, I JUST read "Night Watch" this week, after several years of not reading Pratchett. One of my personal favorites is "Small Gods", which is a one-off Discworld novel about theology & stuff. Well worth the effort. And, of course, dead funny.

Sympathies on the roommate thing. Sounds like someone needs automatic withdrawal for the billpaying.

Snort. He needs automatic boot to ass, is what he needs!!

Yes!!! See, that would solve a lot of my problems, I think. It would expand the scope, and also make the damage count higher and more immediate. And also deal with the high tech/low tech stuff. People used to high tech tend to get jittery and thrown off when they have to go back to primitive conditions. It would also explain a lot of the general confusion, difficulties in keeping track of people. And instead of the rebels being such a force, they'd be helping the actual military regroup who got the crap beaten out of them!!

The beta's been good though. It's making me do better work:) And I think I've rewritten the beginning to make it clear and linear, now I have to weave in some of this detail.

I'm loving Night Watch. It has more depth than I expected. And I so loved the Metaphysical barricade:)

Small Gods is wonderful. I've read my copy just about to pieces. Maybe I should dig it out and read it again...it would go well with philosophy...

Getting to see both of those artists at the same time is filling me with complete giddiness, matched only by my tickets to see Damien Rice at the Wiltern in March.

And we must get together when you're here!!

And yes, we should! I haven't bought my tickets to come out there yet, and need to figure out which poor unsuspecting souls I'm going impose myself upon for floor space for a couple days, but once I do, I'll let you know what's up.

Oooh. Thank you!! It's my reward, really. I've missed out on so many shows since I've been here, for one reason or another that i'm making live music a priority this year:) When I lived in St. Paul, we saw someone live at least once a month, and now that I live in this huge sprawling metropolis, I almost never see anyone live unless I get wildly overpriced tickets to big venues. There are lots of musicians, I've just been bad about accessing them:)
