Just Breath. Really.
Jan. 9th, 2004 01:22 pmSo,
crankygrrl, I had been a tad optimistic. Blue Eyes is actually 275 pages in Times 10 point font, space and a half. How, pardon my language, but how the fuck am I supposed to edit 275 pages of text.
My thesis was only 150 pages!! (And one could say that my thesis never got a final edit because I was so bloody sick of it and my committee was already aghast at the length).
And, I've decided that it needs a prologue as well as an epilogue, because by god I'm not going to do this thing halfassed.
But, anyone have any favorite lines from either The Iliad or The Odyssey, any translation, but I'm partial to the poetry? I want something about home, about sacrifice. (And honestly, this won't end up being as pretentious as it sounds now).
Huge smacking kisses to everyone who has stuck this out with me. I don't blame you if you never want to read the words blue eyes in any combination ever again.
Watched the season three West Wing finale last night, and really, what does Hallelujah not make better?
My Season 1 DVD's arrived and I plunged into the commentaries for the early eps and just fell in love with the show all over again. Brian Henson, big softy, looking at the scene from Exodus from Genesis, Aeryn's request and saying, "Yup that's when John fell in love." And saying in that gob smacked voice that Claudia Black's smile just kills him. And the commentary on Throne for a Loss. They sounds so young and adorable and goofy and I want to hug them all.
Lush's Cynthia Stout shampoo is utterly fantastic!! And I managed to disassemble my shower and put on the new filter, so the duct-taped monstrosity is no more and my hair is no longer being dissolved by chlorine!!
I muchly love this CD, not only because the cover art is gorgeous and a little creepy.

Date: 2004-01-09 02:05 pm (UTC)"The important thing is this: To be able at any moment to sacrifice what we are for what we could become." - Charles DuBois
Also, here's another quote on sacrifice... but, it's kind of insanely long.
"The innermost meaning of sacrifice is the annihilation of the finite just because it is finite. In order to demonstrate that this is the only purpose, the most noble and beautiful must be chosen; above all, man, the fulfillment of the earth. Human sacrifices are the most natural sacrifices. Man, however, is more than the fulfillment of the earth; he is reasonable, and reason is free and nothing but an eternal self-determination toward the infinite. Thus man can sacrifice only himself, and that is what he does in the omnipresent sanctissimum of which the masses are not aware. All artists are self-sacrificing human beings, and to become an artist is nothing but to devote oneself to the subterranean gods. The meaning of divine creation is primarily revealed in the enthusiasm of annihilation. Only in the throes of death is the spark of eternal life ignited." - Friedrich Von Schlegel
Now I have to go catch up on Blue Eyes. *g* (Also, congrats! And 275 isn't that bad, really. I mean, it could be much, much worse.)

Date: 2004-01-09 02:09 pm (UTC)I like the quotes, although the Iliad/Odyssey quotes tie into the prologue. I'm just to lazy to look up the ones I want, and my copies are at home. I've got three editions of each:) And if that isn't true classics geekdom, I don't know what is.

Date: 2004-01-09 02:18 pm (UTC)And now you've got me poking through a copy looking for quotes, and I think some Iliad/Farscape icons are in order, because they are just so perfect together.

Date: 2004-01-09 03:31 pm (UTC)I'd love a sailing over a wine dark sea/ Farscape icon!! They just go together like peas in a pod.
And yeah. You're doomed. Send me your transcripts so I can get you into a Classics program!!:)
You liked L.A., right. UCLA has a topnotch program!! So does my alma mater.

Date: 2004-01-09 04:02 pm (UTC)lol. And yeah, I liked L.A. How about after SLC, though? *g* Classics rather than Film School. Or maybe both, because we all know I'm insane. :)

Date: 2004-01-09 02:53 pm (UTC)Heh. I still don't think anything beats Ghosts, though. Zip 'em up and send me the files. I'll print it out at work in my handy reading format (2 column landscaped, 0.5" margins, 9 pt font) for editing. Just... give me some time. Also it may be easier to mail you the markups in hard copy than enter the corrections. We'll see.
Take a breather. Have a beer. You've earned it.

Date: 2004-01-09 03:29 pm (UTC)And yeah, I don't think anything beats Ghosts either:) (Although while I was showering this morning, I was contemplating a sequel instead of an epilogue. However, beating my head against the shower wall quickly eradicated that stray thought).
And whatever format you want it, I'll send it in. I think the zip will be the easiest though, but it will probably be next week sometime. And, obviously, there's no rush:)

Date: 2004-01-09 03:52 pm (UTC)A more important question? How do you beta 275 pages of fic? *hee* I'm giddy, giddy, gleeful looking back over this trip you've taken us all on.
Also, lush's stout is the best. It does truly awesome things to my hair and I need more. And EFG? That smile? Yeah...it slays us all.

Date: 2004-01-09 03:58 pm (UTC)The shampoo is fantastic. My mother, after visiting me and trying to make off with my Skinny Dip, went nuts at the Lush site. And I'm a diehard Aveda girl for shampoo, but this stuff kicks ass!!

Date: 2004-01-09 04:03 pm (UTC)My mother, in disgust at how long it was taking, said, "What do they have to make it themselves." Hee hee. I love my mom. She so never reads the fine print.

Date: 2004-01-09 09:56 pm (UTC)actually, I think you use words beautifully.
And I do hope I finish. THe end still feels a fucking long way off, and I have been at this YEARS already. I'm so not sure I have the dedication -- or, I guess, the desire, really -- to pull it off.

Date: 2004-01-09 10:02 pm (UTC)But you will finish. I have a lot of faith in you!! And you need to send me pages to read so that I can continue to cheerlead!! But honestly, your biggest hurdle, IMO, is getting it down on paper (which ok, is hardly a small hurdle), but it's so doable. You have all the steps in front of you, laid out like a primrose path, you just have to follow them, and then you'll be done!!
(And before you throw something at me for the absurdly cheery optimism, may I just say that I know plenty of people with Ph.D's who I would never, ever have guessed would finish them. And I therefore have reason to have a little faith in your abilities:)

Date: 2004-01-09 07:13 pm (UTC)I love the Season 1 commentaries, too; they are what really, really sold me on the show. (I was introduced to Farscape via DVD right before the cancellation announcement.) Not only did I like the characters and story - I fell in love with the people behind the scenes.

Date: 2004-01-09 09:57 pm (UTC)And yeah, even if I didn't adore the finished product, my love for the show would be monstrously huge just based on the generosity and adorableness of the cast and the crew:)
Oh, and thanks!!

Date: 2004-01-10 12:07 am (UTC)I cannot wait until I finally have some money and can purchase the DVDs. To watch all the commentaries, etc. I just saw Exodus from Genesis today for the very first time. It was the only episode I hadn't ever seen. And CB's smile...was good.

Date: 2004-01-10 09:59 pm (UTC)I've been rewatching the early eps and just getting giddy all over again:) They were definitely worth the money!!

Date: 2004-01-10 07:04 am (UTC)Second, after watching all the commentaries, I've come to the conclusion that *everyone* has a crush on Claudia Black. It seems that in every commentary, someone has to point out how gorgeous she is. (Unless she's doing the commentary, in which case she says stuff like, "Whoa, I don't think I knew that much leg was showing!")
:)

Date: 2004-01-10 09:57 pm (UTC)And yeah, I think the crushes on Claudia Black are pretty universal, which shows excellent taste, I think:) I just get all mushy over their adoration of her as well. So nice to see a cast interact with generosity and general niceness:)
