First of all - with nods to my fellow Californians. The recall election will take place in October. Thank God. I cannot express how heartily sick I am of hearing about it. I'm happy to listen to [livejournal.com profile] haphazardmethod talk about it because she's logical and reasonable and intelligent (and snarky, lets not forget that:) But local media, man so many of them are just total and complete morons. I want this over with!

Second, I'm so feeling The West Wing love you've got no idea. It's a different kind of love than my Farscape love, which took all of my X-Files adoration and then puffed it up like a blowfish until I was giggling and blushing when I'd say the word, a teenager with an embarrsing crush. So I watch this show, and it's on SciFi, and there's muppets, but no, I'm not really a geek, the lead actor has a great ass. Oh frell it. I'm a geek, I love it unabashedly.

But, gulp and OMG, with WW, I'm seein' the slash. This is a surprise. I'm slash blind. Completely. Not by choice, just by some kind of slashy glaucoma. But In the Shadow of Two Gunmen, Part II. Josh and Sam. Doin' it No question. And they're so, so cute together. Those two eps were beautifully pieced together, and my Leo love knows no bounds.

There's much discussion going on in FS fandom about dark fic. I think [livejournal.com profile] maayan summed things up perfectly in [livejournal.com profile] apothocles's journal. Fandom's growing up, exploring the darker aspects of the characters. And the real point, as she makes, as [livejournal.com profile] searose also makes with her usual eloquence. So the fuck what? (Neither of those writer's would state things in terms quite that crude, but that's the heart of it.)

We read what we read out of our own needs, our own interpretations and reasons. If you don't like it, don't read it. But don't criticize it if you don't have anything constructive to say. Not liking a story is completely legitimate. It happens all the time. But understand your own motivations before you react. This ties into discussions of the series and the season as well.

And as for writers following there own agenda, no shit. We all have an agenda - to finish the story, to tell a story, and while that's connected to fandom if we're writing fic, it is also, as [livejournal.com profile] maayan said, our own stories, our own fiction, because while we are writing in that fandom, once we make the leap into copyright infringement, it's now our story.

Each individual writer puts their own spin on a story - any fandom, doesn't matter, this remains true. Do I like all the spins? Nope. And you know what, I am an unrepentent John and Aeryn shipper. I love them together, they are the heart of the series for me. And I'd rather read a well written fic where one of them is killed or maimed, the sprog killed off, hung upside down from the flagpole, then read something that's poorly written or poorly executed. And that's my perogative. I might still have issues with the story and the characterization. But they're my issues, tied into my views and visions, which is one of the reasons I do write my own fic. I hardly expect my writing to be everyone's cup of tea. But, as much as I love the feedback, and I do - I post to Kansas because of the immedate feedback, I'm writing for myself more than anyone else. And that's what's important.

Follow your own views and visions, and don't be sorry about it, but don't denigrate someone else because of it. I guess this also ties into the critique of people expressing their opinions on the shows themselves. Cofax wonders about fan reaction, both to shows and to criticism of shows and she makes an excellent point. Why do we attack those with different views. I guess I know better. I don't agree with much of the criticism of Season 4, because mostly I loved it. I got more Farscape, that's what I cared about. But I don't dismiss the points of others who did have serious issues with it. But I know better than to read the posts if it's going to make me upset, because more than anything I believe in everyone's free will and ability to interpret things as they see fit. I don't think they're wrong in their critiques. Know what, I don't think I'm wrong either. It's a beautiful system.

We are viewers, and readers and writers and thinkers. We take things in, we run them through our filters, and we all spit out different results. We're not, thank god computers. And we're interpreting story. Not world peace, folks, story, beautiful stories that really do help to make our world a better place, but story nonetheless. Someone disagreeing with you doesn't make you wrong, but it doesn't make them wrong either. So play nice people. Take all of these things we've learned - beauty and hope (and yes I do believe that hope is a prevailing Farscape theme, and so is change or die, because we learn about hope through it's absence as much as it's presence), innovation, moving beyond the boundaries that we've placed ourselves in. I'll say the cliche. Let's be a little bit more than we were.

Thanks on the thumbs up on the recall snark. I try at least to be amusing because I just can't help the ranting. :)

And a big woo-hoo to the J/S slash. Could in the Shadow of Two Gunmen been any more slashy? I think not. My favorite J/S fic, should you be so inclined to read some, is Chance to Make It Real:

I like the writing a lot, even if it makes Sam (and hence, the evil Rob Lowe) the sympathetic one. ;)

No, it's just not possible for it to have been slashier.

I'm telling you, when Sam looks over at Josh wearing his damp and rainy this is my terrible poker face look, I literally yelled out, oh they're so doing it. Adorable boys, all of them. And I'm the world's biggest sucker. I got all giddy when Bartlett tells Leo he's ready. (I'm gonna go look at that story now:)
