Time Keeps On Slippin...
Jul. 17th, 2006 09:32 amI don't know where the weekend went. I do, however, know that it shouldn't have still been going at 2:00 a.m. this morning when I was up reading chicklit (Meg Cabot's "Size 12 is Not Fat" which for chicklit really had a nice zip. The heroine doesn't feel sorry for herself, doesn't sit around and moon after her love interest or bemoan her fate or awful family. It's light and breezy and I bought it for my mom, but read it first because I wanted cotton candy) because it was too hot to sleep and I'd already stayed up to watch the SG-1 premiere and then to write. It is hot in my house, hot I tell you!
I do believe that there will be new SMRT-TV this week, and lo for I am very excited at the prospect.
And, as I said, I did watch SG-1 1x10.
You know what's great about taping the eps? I can read everyone's comments first, and therefore neither have to try and make sense out of the plot nor really pay attention to the plots which rarely make all that much sense anyway. Everyone has done the work for me.
Things I loved:
* Vala. As
danceswithwords, said, I'd probably watch Claudia Black set puppies on fire and be awed. I just... yeah, it's not only a massive crush, it's also awe that I buy the character! I buy her reactions and her sneakiness and her father must have absolutely wanted to tear his hair out:) There's fabulous backstory there and I'd love to see someone write it and I really love that hint that even early on, pre-hosting, she was a lot to handle. But mostly, I just completely engage with my television when she's on my screen because I want to know what happens next.
* Daniel in the dorky armour. Not surprised that he was alive. Not surprised to find Vala there, and the downshifting of his eyes at where her belly should have been. I quite liked the less contentious but still pokey dynamic between them and that he saved her without a second thought. I have less invested in Daniel, but I didn't see his willingness to shoot Adria as out of character. He certainly didn't have any tolerance for the priors or their ilk last season, and I don't think the guise of a child is going to sway him. I do think Vala would have kicked his ass if he'd killed Adria though. I like her edgy hope - it's both scheming, selfish and strangely maternal.
* I like Cam. I can't help it. He's so very pretty. He takes it all so very seriously. OR at least he's starting to. And the pretty. And the fraught. And the flying up to Sam because he's had a rough year, and the thing he knows he can do really, really well is fly. And how nice that he used that for good:) He's still figuring out where he fits in the structure. Because yeah, he's in charge, but he's uncertain of his authority. And no one really says, "Dude, you're in charge. We're going to follow your lead." They all act like they're ready to do their own thing, but will consider his guidance. I liked that at the end, he got to wear his serious face and say that they needed a better plan. (On an entirely meta level, I was cracking up at Vala glancing up sideways at his statement about a plan, and I'm thinking, "No, no. She knows better. Your plans never work!"
I have a vague idea of what happened in the rest of the ep - Teal'c torture; Sam rescued (and she really is pretty adorable) and geeky and fixing stuff; too much ringing and beaming but I love the sort of oh shit look the Asgard kept giving people, and the way he is a superior being but wasn't all that much help); Bra'tac and his suicide mission (and yeah Mitchell. Cute and smarter than you look!). I'm lost on the Ascencion stuff, but I don't care so it doesn't matter.
So, in total, no deep thoughts, although I like the idea they're setting up that the Orii really believe that they're launching a pre-emptive strike because my impression of the Ancients isn't all that hot either and I liked that while Vala doesn't believe, she was honest that both sides have sort of dicked people over. The Orii are zealots, yes. But it'd be interesting in they weren't quite wrong. If they were, or had been, answering the things the Ancients had done to screw everyone, or use everyone. In that case, there isn't a right or wrong side. Just a right or wrong for the losers and winners.

Please? Please?
Date: 2006-07-17 05:45 pm (UTC)I would love to see YOU write it... one of the top 5 best fic authors I've ever read.
Novels could be written on Vala's story... her life before/during/after Quetesh[sp] invaded her & shattered any semblance of dreams she had for her life, her struggle to gain a sense of identity & purpose after the Tokra helped free her, her adventures before meeting SG-1, her determination to survive in Ver Isca despite finding herself in petrifying circumstances, her tragic love & loss of Tomin & Adria...
I have yet to read any of this....
I hope your muse leads you down the path soon! :)

Date: 2006-07-17 06:28 pm (UTC)Hee. Just a little, huh?
I find him weirdly charming, in that I normally have no interest in military men. But well, he's so earnest, and so very, very pretty:)

Date: 2006-07-17 06:14 pm (UTC)Okay, now I'm cracking up. But honestly, that never occurred to me at the time, because my brain is firmly convinced that Cam and John Crichton don't actually look all that alike.
Not only is Cam skinnier, his eyes are greyer and his nose is bigger. I swear.

Date: 2006-07-17 06:37 pm (UTC)As for BB- soooo serious. I did keep expecting him to say- "I have a plan..." and smirk. But no.
It's all very confusing to me- the Ancients, Orii, and all of the other stuff that make no sense to me....

Date: 2006-07-17 07:26 pm (UTC)LOL, I LOVE that stuff. Although I loved it more in
the first two of her e-maily books (Boy Next Door, Boy Meets Girl) and hated it in the last one (Every Boy's Got One), because in the last one, people were emailing each other while in the same car. YES, IN THE SAME CAR!!

Date: 2006-07-17 11:12 pm (UTC)claudia black rocked, vala is so frelling wonderful. as for the armor daniel wore...hee! it was quite something. i quite agree about daniel being willing to shoot adria. that aspect of his personality has been present from the beginning, and after all these years he's learned something about the situations they face. and i'm loving the way the dynamics between him and vala are developing.
your description of cameron makes me say *word*. he's really settling in and growing in a way that suggests he'll be able to show the connection between emotion and experience regardless of whatever else happens. i love that about bb's acting.
bwahaha! oh you're right about
aerynvala's response to the plan statement. *bg*no subject
Date: 2006-07-18 01:22 am (UTC)I'm not totally sure that's where the show is going, but it's an intriguing thought; the Ancients have behaved in arbitrary and less-than-awesome ways in the past (they let a half-ascended goa'uld rampage across the galaxy to punish one of their own), and Daniel has more reason than anybody else to doubt their good intentions. But I think the skepticism Vala brings to the situation is really valuable, because I think she's more attuned to mercenary motives than someone like Mitchell, who is still too idealistic for his own good, or someone like Sam, who's thinking about the mechanics.

Date: 2006-07-18 04:32 am (UTC)I'd actually like to read that - Mitchell, et al realizing her usefulness, finding her insight to be more important than their weaponry and idealism. Because when it comes to their enemies, she's yet to be way off base. And she's very willing to take action instead of dithering.

I did really like the episode. It's not the Stargate I fell in love with, but it will do.
