Grrr

Everytime I think I've exited the town of Cranky and Pissed off, I take a wrong turn and end up back where I started.

Tried to get t-shirts printed online, but because they had "celebrity images" in the graphic, the company wouldn't print them. Dude, explain to me how The Blues Bros. are copyright protected. Grrr. (I actually kind of get where the company is coming from, but I was so proud of my design, and so proud of being ahead of the game enought to make the graphic, find the printing company, order the t-shirts and pay for timely delivery and now I'm back where I started which is with no t-shirts whatsoever).

Lead an English language discussion group last night and now I really miss teaching, particularly teaching college level students and the desire to pursue and advanced degree so I can teach is particularly strong.

Daily Candy had a listing today for roommate counseling and I laughed so hard I almost cried because the example could have come from my house ("It hurts me when you don't do the dishes!" Hee. I think this is brilliant, but M. is uncounselable). Our house is mostly clean, but has been taken over by his crap and his design vision (what I like to call the PK/Chinese restaurant school of design. He seems to believe that only back goes with red, and despite being red/green color blind thinks he should have a vote on color choices to complement our walls. Yeah, yeah, he should have a vote, but I should get to have the final say on color because I can, you know, see it!)

Oy, so much cranky, so little time. It is, however, a beautiful day out and I'm going for a long lunch. I can go for a walk tonight and maybe go to American Apparrel to buy t-shirts, and I'm going on vacation in two days, so life is not as cranky inducing as it seems. And, the fabulous [livejournal.com profile] rubberneck sent a volley my way, which was returned, and really, that always makes my day sunshiney bright:)

For a moment there, I was trying to remember what I'd done lately to piss you off. Ficathon stories aren't due yet, are they?

If you don't mind my asking, what company did you use to try and get the t-shirts printed? Different companies have slightly different policies (read: some are more anal than others). Also, was the design an actual image of Dan Aykroyd and John Belushi from the movie or was it just the name?

The only reason I ask is I deal with this every day because it's part of my job to know copyright law.

I used Zazzle, and it was an image from the movie(but modified)(I modified it from an already modified source). I totally saw their point in covering their behinds and had honestly not thought the whole thing through. While I'm a blatant violator of copyright law in other circumstances, I wouldn't want to get the company in trouble.

Ah, okay. I use Zazzle to print my stuff, too. They tend to follow the same rules my company does. If it's a drawing or doesn't involve any trademarked logos or branding, it's usually fair game. For example, I've had slash pairing t-shirts done by them that just have text (thought use the "Stargate"-esque font), and I actually just received a couple of coffee mugs from them today with one of my SG fanart drawings on them. But I just ordered them for myself and keep them private with no intention to sell (which is an entirely different issue since that does make a difference).

Rule of thumb: photography of any kind, including stuff that's heavily Photoshopped and/or edited, will require the accompaniment of a model release and/or a copyright release agreement.

In case you're ever wondering about the viability of an image for reproduction, feel free to drop me a line. I've got all the loopholes covered. Like I said, it's a big part of my job to cover my company's ass much in the same way Zazzle is trying to.

Thanks so much!! That's all good to know. I can think of some solutions to this in the future, but it's good to know the rules and limitations.

I'm giggly at "It hurts me when you don't do the dishes!" -- it reminds me of the trailer I keep seeing for that Jennifer Anison/Vince Vaughn movie. She says "I want you to WANT to do the dishes," and he says "Why would I WANT to do dishes?!" and I have to say, I see his point.

And someone colorblind does not get to be the final say on color! Silly boy.

I looooove that part of the trailer because I'm totally on his side for that! Nobody wants to do the dishes!!
