Due to my most recent bought of Captain Tripps, I know have an incredibly painful middle ear infection. The best part of it is my near total deafness which, while it allows me to ignore the Led Zepplin song M. is currently learning, also works as a drawback when part of one's job is to answer phones and speak to real people, all of whom seem to be sneaking up on me. Another unfortunate side effect is the ability to decipher my food by chewing it - not only do I get the fascinating flavors and textures, but the intimate sound of it masticating in my mouth. Mmmm.

I even went to the doctor for this little adventure. Those of you who know how I feel about the doctor will recognize the severity of my pain, and my disgust at this state of affairs. I know have some lovely amoxocillan, stock in Sudafed, and the knowledge that there's "something weird" going on in my ear. (Words directly from my doctor, and people wonder why I doubt the medical profession. Although those of you in the medical profession - what's the worst thing that could happen to me for exceeding the recommended dosage of Sudafed?) Apparently, adults don't get middle ear infections very often, a fact that the internet seems to back my doctor up on because most of the information provided is about kids.

In other news, I have actually started my Remix thanks to the fabulous [livejournal.com profile] rubberneck and after traumatizing [livejournal.com profile] crankygrrl completely by making her read my Remixee's fic to garner her help. Kath, I still promise you rewards for this. This one is definitely fitting the definition of a challenge.

Watched the second season of Dead Like Me, and wow, it really hit it's stride in season two. The characters were richer, more fully formed, the deaths and the reactions so much more profound, and just when this lovely subtle shifts in character and plot had been set in motion, I come to find out that there is no season three. Fuckers.

Watched Bones tonight, and enjoyed it thoroughly, even though I giggled all the way through the "Smithsonian" director (who is apparently an archaeologist, although these producers have clearly never met any archaeologists if they think they can put a suit together without help) deducing all sorts of information from the pictures of the suspect's apartment.

I was utterly charmed by Booth and Bones singing "Hot Blooded." That whole scene felt very natural and organic and vaguely embarrassing in that way that you can only be truly geeky with your friends. It felt far less forced than the show can sometimes feel. And I'm sucker enough that the ending, with Booth all bruised and battered, slipping up under her ropes and holding on to her even as he sort of staggers was really fabulous. Such a nice scene because while she was obviously freaked out and distraught, it still felt like a meeting of equals. She didn't read as a victim, but still read as awfully glad to be saved.

And how much did I love Bug Boy's vintage mini-Cooper and Booth hunched up in it, then asking Brennan for a ride home.

I also called Adam Baldwin as the bad guy within the first meeting, though, so it's not like they're really working the mystery angle much, but I'm enjoying the way these characters are developing.

My life? Not so exciting at the moment. But I promise to check in once my hearing is restored.

Oh, and [livejournal.com profile] kerlin has just finished Strong Poison, Gaudy Night and Busman's Honeymoon. Fortunately, she enjoyed them all, and therefore I don't have to defriend her:) Hee. I'd never do that. But these were all books that I loved (and love) unconditionally and much as I adore Gaudy Night, I've always had a huge soft spot for Busman's Honeymoon. The adultness of Peter and Harriet's relationship, the way they protect each other, the way this warm fluffy book that reads almost like a mental PWP for the Wimsey/Vane relationship takes this dark turn towards the end and reminds the reader that they're not reading in a safe world, that it's so easy for lives to turn, to be touched by tragedy and bad choices and those choices effect people whom one never imagined would be touched by them.

bleh! a curse on middle-ear infections. i have been plagued with all kinds sinus since i was a wee little kid, and it remains the great disappointment of my adulthood that i did not ever truly graduate out of being a sickly child. i wish, though, that i had some kind of magic cure, given all that. i really don't. sleep as close to sitting straight up as is humanly possible. xoxox.

I braved the sleeping close to horizontal last night (not too close because I always have two pillows) because it didn't hurt as much, and now I'm worse than I was yesterday.

A curse on sinuses!!

a. Poor ears! (hugs you gently)

b. She didn't read Have His Carcase?? I love that one almost as much as Gaudy Night, and no you may not defriend me over that.

c. Um, am I the only person who has intermittent daydreams about The Wedding Night out of Busman's Honeymoon, even though I'd never write them because they don't have any banter or literary allusions? *g*

In response to b, I think she's currently reading it (wasn't available at the time:) And yeah, I like it very much, but I never had the visceral response to it that I had to Gaudy Night.

As to C, no:) No you're not the only one. But I'm also fairly happy with the fade to black aspect of that, too:)

Apparently the library system can't find a copy of Have His Carcase in Vermont. Charming of them. But I've ordered my own copy from the bookstore and should have it by the weekend. :)

Good grief, first monkeyfromhell/whitelight/crazylady! with the ear infection, now you. If you two weren't on opposite sides of the country, I'd be paranoid. ::pats you::

Your remix situation sounds like mine. *snicker* And my betas had to read my remixee's fic toooooo! Yup. Let's see, I took the basic frame of the plot (*g*) switched the POV and told the story from a character who more or less disappeared and did other stuff for most of the fic, but then came back at the end. So I got to tell my own story while not dissing my remixee's work. I'm quite proud, actually.

I owe Feldman a huge debt of gratitude. She pretty much said, okay, here are your options, and this one will work. And, as usual, she's right:) Glad I'm not the only one in this boat!!

Hmm. Are they uncommon? Because I've had a couple (very mild, though) middle ear infections in the last couple years. Of course, that could be because my ears itch constantly and I'm forever poking at them. {/TMI} I hope you feel better soon, because it affects *everything*, having that little bit of you no working right. Ugh.

Pretty uncommon in adults. And yeah:) Poking things into them is considered a Very Bad Idea:)

But thanks honey.

that reads almost like a mental PWP for the Wimsey/Vane relationship

I never thought of it that way but mmmm, yes. *g*

I was so surprised with the end of Busman's Honeymoon, but delighted as well. Perhaps it was the final step in Sayers's journey to really fleshing Peter out as a character, giving him that darkness and almost hopelessness even during what should be the happiest time of his life. I loved Bunter's description to Harriet of Peter's visit to the prison - Peter asking Crutchley's forgiveness, Crutchley refusing it. And of course the final image. :)

sheez, sorry to hear of it... hate anti-b's like the plague, but sometimes, you just need-em... [replacing the good stuff in your gi tract that'll be killed? 'cuz I didn't used to do that, and suffered for it...] consider doing the vicks vaporizer w/ menthol oil at night [the kaz brand is cheap...] perhaps that will clear anything in the sinuses, so the ear can drain properly... also perhaps you can elevate the head of the bed, instead of more pillows, to help things drain the right way... stuff you prolly have thought of, just sayin'. Best of luck...

Thanks for the advice! And yeah, haven't taken antibiotics since I was in college. But I'm eating plenty of yogurt to make up for it:)
