Due to my most recent bought of Captain Tripps, I know have an incredibly painful middle ear infection. The best part of it is my near total deafness which, while it allows me to ignore the Led Zepplin song M. is currently learning, also works as a drawback when part of one's job is to answer phones and speak to real people, all of whom seem to be sneaking up on me. Another unfortunate side effect is the ability to decipher my food by chewing it - not only do I get the fascinating flavors and textures, but the intimate sound of it masticating in my mouth. Mmmm.
I even went to the doctor for this little adventure. Those of you who know how I feel about the doctor will recognize the severity of my pain, and my disgust at this state of affairs. I know have some lovely amoxocillan, stock in Sudafed, and the knowledge that there's "something weird" going on in my ear. (Words directly from my doctor, and people wonder why I doubt the medical profession. Although those of you in the medical profession - what's the worst thing that could happen to me for exceeding the recommended dosage of Sudafed?) Apparently, adults don't get middle ear infections very often, a fact that the internet seems to back my doctor up on because most of the information provided is about kids.
In other news, I have actually started my Remix thanks to the fabulous
rubberneck and after traumatizing
crankygrrl completely by making her read my Remixee's fic to garner her help. Kath, I still promise you rewards for this. This one is definitely fitting the definition of a challenge.
Watched the second season of Dead Like Me, and wow, it really hit it's stride in season two. The characters were richer, more fully formed, the deaths and the reactions so much more profound, and just when this lovely subtle shifts in character and plot had been set in motion, I come to find out that there is no season three. Fuckers.
Watched Bones tonight, and enjoyed it thoroughly, even though I giggled all the way through the "Smithsonian" director (who is apparently an archaeologist, although these producers have clearly never met any archaeologists if they think they can put a suit together without help) deducing all sorts of information from the pictures of the suspect's apartment.
I was utterly charmed by Booth and Bones singing "Hot Blooded." That whole scene felt very natural and organic and vaguely embarrassing in that way that you can only be truly geeky with your friends. It felt far less forced than the show can sometimes feel. And I'm sucker enough that the ending, with Booth all bruised and battered, slipping up under her ropes and holding on to her even as he sort of staggers was really fabulous. Such a nice scene because while she was obviously freaked out and distraught, it still felt like a meeting of equals. She didn't read as a victim, but still read as awfully glad to be saved.
And how much did I love Bug Boy's vintage mini-Cooper and Booth hunched up in it, then asking Brennan for a ride home.
I also called Adam Baldwin as the bad guy within the first meeting, though, so it's not like they're really working the mystery angle much, but I'm enjoying the way these characters are developing.
My life? Not so exciting at the moment. But I promise to check in once my hearing is restored.
Oh, and
kerlin has just finished Strong Poison, Gaudy Night and Busman's Honeymoon. Fortunately, she enjoyed them all, and therefore I don't have to defriend her:) Hee. I'd never do that. But these were all books that I loved (and love) unconditionally and much as I adore Gaudy Night, I've always had a huge soft spot for Busman's Honeymoon. The adultness of Peter and Harriet's relationship, the way they protect each other, the way this warm fluffy book that reads almost like a mental PWP for the Wimsey/Vane relationship takes this dark turn towards the end and reminds the reader that they're not reading in a safe world, that it's so easy for lives to turn, to be touched by tragedy and bad choices and those choices effect people whom one never imagined would be touched by them.

c. Um, am I the only person who has intermittent daydreams about The Wedding Night out of Busman's Honeymoon, even though I'd never write them because they don't have any banter or literary allusions? *g*

I was so surprised with the end of Busman's Honeymoon, but delighted as well. Perhaps it was the final step in Sayers's journey to really fleshing Peter out as a character, giving him that darkness and almost hopelessness even during what should be the happiest time of his life. I loved Bunter's description to Harriet of Peter's visit to the prison - Peter asking Crutchley's forgiveness, Crutchley refusing it. And of course the final image. :)
