Acquisitive Gene
Feb. 15th, 2006 11:38 amLast night, as a Valentine's treat to myself, I went to Best Buy to purchase the Cary Grant boxset and the next set of Starburst editions since the DVD's loaned to the ex contained GEM and Losing Time and Relativity, which I haven't seen in over a year.
The Cary Grant set is beautiful and I spent a lot of time just petting it when I got home. It came with some vintage postcards and I think I'll matte the Holiday ones.
I watched figure skating while indulging in some much welcome chat/snark with
cofax7 on YIM. The outfits crack me up, and then I can turn to
denyeverything1 to explain the skating. Despite what I've read, I can think of no good reason for that very - I believe someone used to oh so appropriate word 'fey' - young man to dress like a swan. However, after the one gloved James Bond/Waiter/Penguin boy and Mr. Lite Brite, the swan seemed sort of... tame.
To all those who took "EvOl Fic Conspiracy" icons, just as a point of reference, the image is an inkstand and quill pen in front of a stack of scrolls. Not a cannon. Although I enjoy the irony of the words as a weapon concept, so feel free to consider it a cannon if you'd like. And in that vein, congratulations to all of The Sparky winners!!! And a big thank you to Jeff and Cass for running the show this final time. Your hard work was much appreciated.
I did watch "Green Eyed Monster" post skating and well... I'm just so terribly fond of it. The words and the pacing, the utter focus on the quadrangle and how damn clever that was. The absolute lushness of the emotion and even the incredibly cheesy ending, because it's so gentle, so delicate and deliberate even before the goofy twinkling star ( and seriously, I love the commentaries because I've internalized the show enough that I can "read" them as seperate entities and BB's embarrasment at that twinkling star makes me laugh, as does the fact that he's such a giant adorable dork talking about this episode, giddy in love with his co-stars and this ultra cool job he has:)
I also realized how beautiful some of the stuff in the Talyn arc is paralleled by much darker things in Season 4. When John walks away pre-finger of friendhsip insertion, he's viewing it as a betrayal, as Aeryn siding with Crais, having betrayed him with Crais. And it's a lie, a false construct. He's given that, both that she was willing to do anything for him, but ultimately wasn't asked to do more than give her life. In Season 4, John has to face a real betrayal (and much as I love Aeryn, much as I can justify her actions and behaviors, bringing Scorpy on board for whatever reason is a betrayal). Has to face something more than a fantasy playing out, and so does Aeryn. She got the whole dramatic cycle, the giddy glory of first love and none of the drawbacks until his death. And when they come back together, they're both too broken to really know what to do, to react in anyway that isn't about protection and internalization as opposed to anger and lashing and clean words, however mistaken.
Sigh. I miss my messy, beautiful grown up show. And yes, I say this after having discussed an episode that featured projectile vomiting, a "Who's bigger" line, more projectile vomiting and a plan that at one point involved flying out the ass of a giant space creature. No, I do not see the irony.
In conclusion, why isn't there more tentative, sexy post-GEM stuff? Not even porn so much as that sort of gawky, sexy what do we do now sort of interaction? I'd looooove to see some of that.
And sigh, Gilmore Girls is just making me sad these days. I don't know how much more of it I can take.

I don't love it. But I DO find it makes for interesting TV. He is facing so much change, it makes sense that he would get a bit spun.
Thank you, I hadn't been able to explain WHY I felt this was ok - and nowI can.

Date: 2006-02-15 08:41 pm (UTC)That's not irony, love, that's art. As much as we would like to pretend it doesn't, so much of real, 'adult' life and love features projectile vomiting, jealousy, pissing contests and stuff coming out of your ass (one way or another) — Farscape just played it out a little less metaphorically than some. And if you don't believe me about the P.V. ask Feldman. ;]

And dude, are my e-mails not getting through?
