This is mostly a quick post to say thank you so much to [livejournal.com profile] whitelight1, [livejournal.com profile] kerlin and [livejournal.com profile] reblog for the absolutely gorgeous Aeryn icons. They are really beautiful and made me very weepy this afternoon when I got to work. And I can't wait to show them all off (and [livejournal.com profile] fbf has promised me a veiled sexual reference icon as well. I'm very excited). This is one of [livejournal.com profile] whitelight1's with Damien Rice lyrics.

Just got back from a Child Abuse and Prevention conference. Sigh. I've been on the hotline, done advocacy work for domestic violence and sexual assault, but it's hard to develop a veneer when it comes to children. Wish there wasn't such a need to educate parents and the public on signs of abuse, but there still is. Not really an article I'm looking forward to writing. Coming back to the office, and seeing all of those gorgeous icons just did me in.

A quick apology to the people waiting for the next chapter of Blue Eyes. It will be soon, this week even if it kills me. This is my busy time, at both jobs and with dance, and I'm so sorry to keep anyone waiting. There needs to be more hours. Or maybe, like Lorne, I can have my sleep removed. I appreciate the support, appreciate the continued enthusiasm and feedback. It makes a world of difference.

And finally, the bus strike in L.A. is close to being over. And to whomever they interviewed on the radio, who was annoyed that the mechanics and their families had been receiving practically free health coverage, you can bite me. Health care and health coverage should be a universal. Everyone should have access to free, quality health care. The fact that so many children, so many people in this city of excess don't have access to medical care makes me furious. We should be advocating for more employers to help provide it, for the state to help provide it.

One of my students ( a young Republican in the making, who has a very mature understanding of the fundamental differences in the parties) asked me why I was a Democrat, why I thought government should be involved in the lives of the people, and it's easy for me to answer that. In my mind, government has an obligation to it's citizens, to serve them, to protect them, to shelter them and care for them. It isn't to violate or infringe upon their rights, to coddle them or to treat them as weak and unthinking, but to live up to it's obligation of governing. Equality, and fairness and equal access. In that same vein, the citizens have an obligation to the state, and to each other to do the same thing. To do for each other and to live up to their obligations as citizens of a free state. To protest against violations of freedom and to advocate for equality and equal access. Which is why I'm a Democrat.

It's also why I was yelling at the radio today. I don't know how I feel about Howard Dean. I know there are policies that he supports that I do not, but I understand why he's rallying the support of the people, and that's because he's actually talking to and working with the people. And truthfully, I think John Kerry is living on another planet if he doesn't think that connection is enough to carry Dean into the Presidential race or make him a serious contender against President Bush. Did he miss the California recall election?
