Bits of Disconnect
Jul. 10th, 2003 11:47 amI will never be good at falls. It is unnatural and my head still hurts, and I get tired of that exasperated head shaking response from the instructors, who otherwise I like very much. No, no, you're catching yourself with your elbows. Well, buddy, if you'd spent almost 30 years trying to keep yourself from hitting the ground, you'd be trying to catch yourself as well. Grumble,grumble, stupid falls. We won't talking about the rolling falls, which I'm good at but hurt my knee like a sonofabitch. (Thank you dad for teaching me to make adjectives out of expletives).
Driving home on Sunset, I look over at the Hustler store - which first of all, may I just say defines what I love and loathe about Hollywood. You can buy smoothies with pornographic names and sit outside in the sunshine drinking them next to the soft-core porn offerings of Larry Flynt's enterprise - and there are all sorts of signs saying, Free Porn and Two for One Porn and I just kept giggling, thinking primarily of the Trading Card porn, and almost drove into the car in front of me.

infinitemonkeys has a brilliant post responding not only to A.S. Byatt's review of the book, but also discussing the strengths and weakness of Rowling and the critical response.Harry Potter post.
I will only add this: I read the first book because it reminded me of Roald Dahl and am still reading because the stories grow more complex, and it is a rare experience to watch a published writer grow in confidence and skill and still maintain good story telling. ( Cut for Brief Spoilers )
Finally, because I need to take a break from Blue Eyes (because it's another character's POV turn, but I really want to keep writing John), and need to write the DIP - are there rules that I've missed out on? Taking off, putting on, first time, what? And who has the red and black vest?
