I stole the Thomas Covenant books from my brother (and I possibly still have them) and got about 50 pages into the first one and then put it down. Then again, I find most sci-fi/fantasy books hard to read and unless the concept grabs me right up front (or I've been promised something that I'll love) I'm not going to stick around for it.
And I think a hangover induced call out once every thirty years is perfectly fine.
