Since my mom was here this weekend, I am understandably behind the times, fannish-wise. Although I am adding to their story, and suggesting that my mom and my aunt consider the whole flaming boat send off, per [livejournal.com profile] rubberneck's apt suggestion.

Family. A whole new kind of crazy that everyone gets to experience in their own special way.

We did, finally, see the pirate movie.

I enjoyed this one far more than the first, largely because the first one had established the set-up, had introduced the characters and the conflict and I was ready to go play again.

I continue to be charmed by Jack Sparrow and his moral ambiguity. There needs to be a convention of morally ambiguous, but basically good natured characters - Jack Sparrow, Vala, the other Captain Jack, etc. They could play cards and drink rum and steal the pretty.

And I liked that Jack doesn't know what he wants, but really, neither does Elizabeth and oddly (for a movie of this sort), her conflict really is between a comfortable, stable life and freedom, represented by two different men, but not so much embodied by them. Will isn't really a staid stay at home (and Orlando Bloom seemed to be having a lot more fun this go around), and Jack isn't any sort of example. BUt for a woman of Elizabeth's class and status, the freedom to do anything she wants must be heady temptation indeed. She's smart and she's brave and she's the one who accomplishes things, who will take the risks that the others aren't going to and I love that about her. Liking her this much surprised me. That in the festival of pretty, I'm allowed to like this strong, competent women surprised me. She wasn't dumbed down, she wasn't left to just be the girl in the cell, the prize.

And dude, Norrington all scruffy and filthy and bitter is possibly hotter than any of them. If I were Elizabeth, I'd consider running away with him. He seems like he'd be more fun than either Jack or Will. He's got a lot to prove:)

I also, finally, watched SG-1.. Am I the only one who just thinks "The Matrix" when I hear Morpheus these days? Larry Fishburne could come on board and he and Teal'c could be big and handsome and daunting and deepvoiced together. No? Okay, can't have everything.

Basically, my love for Vala continues unabated because she's there, and it's a new costume to put on. She's trying this whole being part of a team thing out and she wants to get started. I loved her prepping for her psych evaluation, and the poor well-meaning psychiatrist who wasn't incompetent, just wasn't... ready for her. I think she was surprised by how much of what she does say is a lie. She's been surviving, been in this mode of putting on her costumes and her characters and living this persona because she wants to not just survive but thrive and I don't think she can seperate what's true and what's not anymore. I think, if she honestly was effected by the polygraph, that it was a reflection of not being able to tell the difference herself until a machine tried to do it for her. I also think that the ability to lie charmingly and be believed has kept her alive and something that robs her of that must be very scary indeed. Or she could have just been playing all of them:) I'm fine with all of that.

The brain parasite storyline was fine. The lizard wrangling was hilarious and Teal'c got to bond with his pretty, pretty boyfriend. I should find it less adorable that Mitchell wears his sleeves rolled up and that he wears his hat off world. I know. But well, I'm in this for the pretty. And I've sort of loved sweet, geeky Daniel these last two eps. I loved him sort of ruthless last ep with Adria, and this week, he was kind of adorable with the protests about using his computer, and getting dragged into the gate room. He can stay, and maybe have a threesome with Mitchell and Vala, because [livejournal.com profile] cofax7 is right and now Mitchell finally has someone to boss around and I think they both could take advantage of that. I loved Vala's serious, and vigorous nod when he stood a little too close and told her she was on probation and to not screw up. Mmmmm. So pretty. She could so fuck with him, which I think is part of the appeal of that pairing. Turn all that love and respect he has for authority and for the Air Force on it's head. It'd give her an incentive to behave in the field:)

I'm too involved in the novel to really write fic (that isn't already accounted for), but I imagine a conversation with Vala in recover, saying to Daniel that she supposes she really shouldn't find him more appealing after he wanted to shoot her daughter, and Daniel sort of shrugging. They've lost a lot of the antagonism which is kind of nice, and I'd like to see why. I think Daniel does see a level or loss in her, a level of sacrifice that he didn't think she was capable of. He respects her and it's nearly impossible to not like her, even when you want to lock her up.

I'd like to see the writers address what was taken from her - not just the child, which is probably a mixed blessing for Vala - but her freedom, the control over her body, her time and many of her choices. I'd like to see some fic writers deal with this, and I'd like to see fic showing small ways that the team does and doesn't accept her.

Why yes, I am mostly in this for Vala.

I'd need a Veronica Mars character and someone from Hex to really make it sing for me...

Actually, that might be another drabble - Veronica, Starbuck and Thelma sitting around drinking and playing poker and bitching about how hard it is to be righteous all the time (Starbuck may yet disqualify herself.)

The more I think about it, my multiverse fic from last year may need a sequel.

Hmmm. Well, I'm perfectly happy to include either Dick or Logan or possibly Lamb in the desert island, and if you'd really like, Thelma could go along for the ride, although Hex didn't really do it for me.

I think I basically just find anything he does adorable. Damnit.

Yes, please? I loved that moment so much. I'm waiting for him to lose his patience with her running after Daniel and just have him kiss her already to get her attention.

I do always get this feeling that Vala and Cameron are in on something that no one else knows about. I know it's probably just the little winks and inward pleasures CB & BB are having, but it reflects on the screen and makes me curious about what's behind it.

I need to stop rambling at you...

good point about what vala's lost. intriguing to think about how that might hinge with daniel's experiences. and oh yes to the cute and adorable. :)

i love what you said here: "that it was a reflection of not being able to tell the difference herself until a machine tried to do it for her." and those scenes were wonderful. they both seemed to surprise each other in the end which was charming. and as much as he wasn't prepared for her, it felt as if vala wasn't ultimately prepared for herself on some level.

as for pirates, oh yes and oh my. *bg*

Nope, I did too. *g*

Larry Fishburne could come on board and he and Teal'c could be big and handsome and daunting and deepvoiced together.

That would be fabulous. Alas, we'll never see it.

It was nice to see hyper-excited Daniel in the ep, as opposed to the pissy Daniel from most of season 9. And aww Teal'c was sad that he had to leave his boyfriend Mitchell behind in the cave. :D

Yes, yes and yes! Norrington is more... interesting now that he's all scruffified. XD

They so should!
