My boss just called me to find out how to spell "convenience." $100,000 to a top Liberal Arts school. Yup. Money well spent. (Snort. I'm totally being facetious. I loved my school and my education). Their is a tinge of orange bitter irony in this, though.

So, to pull my self out of my doldrums (which are receeding upon [livejournal.com profile] leadensky taking a gander at the grid and [livejournal.com profile] crankygrrl writing me porn), I'd like to do the Favorite Moments meme.

Name a character from one of my fandoms, and I will tell you my top 3 moments or scenes (or at least 3 of my favorites) of them.

I'll do: Angel, BtVS, Farscape, Firefly, West Wing, Gilmore Girls, Bujold, Sayers, The X-Files, 9th Doctor Who, SG-1 S9, Star Wars, and any of the Megan Whalen Turner books.

for the aspiring novelist: Jess from GG.

for the making you happy: Toby, TWW ;)

Oy, Jess is such a twerp.

1. His last conversation with Rory in the bookstore, when he's finally grown up, gets that she's using him, and is mad, but finally understands her a little.

2. The moments with his dad, when he's trying to figure out where he belongs.

3. Him harassing Luke. That never gets old.

Toby. Gah. I don't know how to choose only 3 Toby moments.

1. The last scene with CJ last night was really beautiful.

2. Breaking the glass window seperating his office from Will's. And the moment where he and will write the speech.

3. All of his scenes with Sam, and CJ. And the heartbreaking scene when Andy refuses the house. And babies come with hats, that moment between him and Bartlett.

4. Him finally forgiving his father, letting him in.

5. The pissiness all across the heartland when they get left behind.

Hmmm.

The first sight of her - brassy and brazen and so much to much for everyone around her.

The fight on the roof - all that rage, all that hurt little girl anger.

"Want, take, have." And breaking into the store, right before everything goes so horrible sour. It's such a turning point for her - that moment between id and ego, when she could go either way and her destructiveness is sexual and vital and a little scary.

Well, gee, who would I pick?

Farscape - John

From: [identity profile] thassalia.livejournal.com
1. The entire hotel room scene in AHR. Because he's breaking, and he's on earth, and he looks for the comfort he needs in Aeryn, gives some back and there's nothing tentative, but it's so absolutely delicate. From guilt to anger to sadness to want.

2. The dancing on tabletops speech. He's lost it, mostly. Has not a lot else to lose and it's John Crichton in all his manic glory, with Aeryn watching on. Reveling in him, because at the end of the day, he's hers, and not the universes.

3. The final conversation with Harvey during Promises.

4. His joy at seeing his Sun, the way he talks Aeryn through the birth.

It's impossible to choose really - Him comforting Aeryn during TWWW, then listening. "Kill my sex life." All his moments with D'Argo - pissy, angry, goofy, needy, childish, comforting. His love for his family, in all their flaws and failures. His love of all things wonderous and strange, of Aeryn, of science, of flight, of his mind. His strength, his delusions, his idealism and the way that breaks. His relationship with Scorpy, and the impossible decisions he makes, and his choice, at the end, to let the universe see what the wormholes can do, the way he's willing to end everything.

So, so hard to choose.

You're absolutely right...so, so hard to choose!

Those first 2 are definitely in my top 5.

I think one of my favorite John moments is when he sees Aeryn in SoD out in the snow, he's on his knees. The look on his face...oh man.

heh, [livejournal.com profile] pdxscaper beat me to John Crichton, so let's go for SG-1 Cameron Mitchell

Date: 2006-05-09 10:54 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] thassalia.livejournal.com
Hee.

1. The first moment we meet him in his dress blues, having lusty thoughts about the stargate.

2. Tie between the first moment he sees Vala, and "Bullets bounce!"

3. Invisa Cameron running amok looking for Teal'c. His boundless enthusiasm, and snark and total inability to think things through before taking action.

(And on a purely visual note, him all stretched out on the hospital bed in his Levis, asleep with a magazine on his chest).

One of the things that makes him so different from John is that enthusiasm and the inability to plan through to the end. John knew his plans would end in disaster, but he wasn't impulsive. Rash, and dangerous, but not impulsive. Cameron's a fighter jock, John's a scientist. Totally different approaches, which is slowly starting to come through.

1. The moment in Humbug, when he's standing there propped up on the trailer step, the epitome of GQ manliness and we just know what a dork he is, and love him for it.

2. "That's why they put the I in FBI."

3. Shaking the bile off his hands from the escalator.

4. Losing his gun. Again. And again.

5. All of the baseball episode. The ice cream, and him being such a pain in the ass, and the joy at the end - fastballs and spring and Scully.

Miles Naismith Vorkosigan.

Date: 2006-05-10 04:52 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] thassalia.livejournal.com
1. Our introduction to Miles the teenager, trying desperately to fit in and breaking his bones.

2. Miles lying about what happened, thinking he could fix it, and all of the resultant fallout.

3. Miles appreciation of his wolfgirl (who's name I've spaced on). Wanting her to have the best life possible before she dies.

I really love these books, but I frequently want to smack Miles with something heavy:)

Taura, his golden goddess, raunchy and ravenous and fragile.

I love Miles dearly. For all his mistakes and triumphs and outrageous schemes, he just keeps on going, refusing to give in, ever - to enemies, tricksters, himself.

In Memory, that moment of discovery of the bribe he's been offered, and then wrestling, almost literally wrestling with himself, is one of my very favorite moments in his life.

Did you know that the book with Cavilo was partial homage to Blake's 7? Her character was fairly closely based on Servalan. Not sure of anyone else, but that I do recall.

I love Miles, but I didn't really love him until Memory and Mirror Dance. He frustrated me on so many levels (which is a good thing, I think, as a reader) and it was the loyalty of the his friends and family that convinced me to invest in him.

2. "I'm nice men."

3. "I love you." "I know."

4. All of the opening scene on Hoth. "I thought they smelled bad on the outside!"

5. Getting punched by Lando.

6. Shooting frelling well first in the bar!!

Honestly, there aren't any moments when I don't love him:)

How about Chiana, Farscape?

Date: 2006-05-10 04:46 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] thassalia.livejournal.com
1. Chiana volunteering to go with John to the Gammack base. Because it's the first moment she thinks beyond her immediate needs, and whatever her real motivation, there's a little altruism there as well and it's a turning point for all of them.

2. Her utter bravery in helping to birth Talyn, and conversely her grief at his funeral. The moment she's kneeling on Moya's floor, and tells her to do what she wants to the rogue leviathan.

3. All of Natural Election, when she's still so skittish from her own traumas, trying to find connections again - with all of the crew, her tentative alliance with Aeryn (and the betrayal of that), her love for John, all of that misplaced, misguided, genuine loyalty and her total inability to keep a secret.

4. The moment in UR when she's leaning against Aeryn, watching her read. It's such a beautiful study in contrasts.

5. When she kisses John to say thank you, and finally learns something new about family, and grace.

From: [identity profile] lomer.livejournal.com
Ooo I got more then three I got five. :) I feel special! I enjoy the contrast of Chiana with other crew members as well. She's a great catalyist and an equally excellent indicator of other characters headspace based on how they interact with her. Gotta love a character like that. :) Makes an ensemble show even more fun!

Hee! About the spelling thing. My husband (who is graduating this Saturday with a Masters in Education) so very often shouts "How do you spell occasionally? suspicion? etc.) The kicker is I have a vocational degree, and oh, the grief he gave me when he got his Bachelors.

Abby Bartlet.

Date: 2006-05-10 04:39 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] thassalia.livejournal.com
1. Abby commandeering all of the women in the ballroom to come sit and entertain her because she's angry, and pissy and wants to throttle her husband and doesn't want to give up her license.

2. Abby coming back when Bartlett has the flu. Her patence with him, her love of him, and the fact that she really is a fabulous doctor with an ego to match (but she'd have to have a matching ego or she'd never survive).

3. Her pride after the election, the faith and pride she's got in Bartlett. I love that. I love the strength of their relationship, these two bright, fierce uncompromising people figuring out how to have a happy marriage.

I also love when she hires Amy at the luncheon (but then I really love Amy). And when she's in the wheel chair, wreaking havoc on the staffers, and when she talks to Babish, the resignation there, the way she keeps fighting first.

Exactly. I'm sort of extraordinarly pleased that Santos got Amy to come work for him:)

And I love that whole scene with the champagne, and her calling CJ Claudia Jean and the place she gets to at the end, knowing it's the right decision.

1. The very first time he says "Fantastic!!" Because it was love from there on out.

2. His rage, his loss in the face of the Dalek, in the face of everything he's had to do. The weight of his life, of having seen so very much and the fact that joy is still a part of it.

3. The moment in father's day when he realizes what Rose wanted to see and he's angry and jealous and hurt and pissy. Because he'll rage, and then he'll come back, because he likes all these miserable apes and he simply can't help himself.

Whimpers. I so love nine.
