Tennessee Flat-Top Box
Sep. 12th, 2003 10:15 amBeen a hell of a week for the music industry. The man in black made it through 71 years and died a few short years after his wife, again not long after putting out an album that was a highlight of his career. If anyone has heard or doesn't own American Man IV, it's absolutely worth it, a master at the end of his life, looking back on the bad and the good and looking forward at the next challenge.
Tennesse Flat-Top Box is one of my favorite of his songs, and there's a great version that his daughter Rosanne Cash does on one of her albums, but there are really too many to name. His versions of "One" and of "Hurt" drew in people who dismissed him as some aging C&W twanger. And they got to discover all that genius and passion and his commitment to people who didn't have a voice, his sly sense of humor, faith in God, and just pure, hard-rocking love of music. He will absolutely be missed.
And, I wear it for the thousands who have died,
Believen' that the Lord was on their side,
I wear it for another hundred thousand who have died,
Believen' that we all were on their side.
Well, there's things that never will be right I know,
And things need changin' everywhere you go,
But 'til we start to make a move to make a few things right,
You'll never see me wear a suit of white.
Ah, I'd love to wear a rainbow every day,
And tell the world that everything's OK,
But I'll try to carry off a little darkness on my back,
'Till things are brighter, I'm the Man In Black.
Oh, and everyone should participate in this week's
farscapefriday drabble challenge.
shaye and
themoonbar are sly geniuses this week, although I can't get the songs out of my head long enough to write anything yet!
ETA - One would think that since I made the changes to my LJ myself, I'd remember what I changed the link name's too. One would be wrong. And anyone know what code I need to make the text a darker color. The grey's making my eyes hurt. I found a list of color codes, but I'm not sure if they're right.
