If you haven't read [livejournal.com profile] cofax7's essay on fannish ownership, do yourself a favor and go here and read it. She talks about the moral, ethical and practical implications of fannish ownership in the context not only of derivative work from the original source but within the fan communities themselves and how we regard each others work, and how we think of our own work. It's fascinating stuff and Cofax has the training and the fine mind to make it all make sense, whatever your take on the topic is.

I'm slowly getting to read the Remixes due to the freelance project that just will not end. So I didn't realize until yesterday that I got not one, but two Remixes!! I apologize to the author of "Lonely Sea and the Sky". I didn't realize that the story had been remixed since Alien is at the top of the list alphabetically and I didn't know to look for two!

The first Alien (Body and Soul Funky Remix) is a remix of my very first fic!! A [livejournal.com profile] farscapefriday drabble that had been with me for a very long time before I wrote it down. This is a lovely POV swap, and it makes me incredibly happy.

The second is sort of extraordinary. Lonely Sea and the Sky (The Repose of Rivers Remix) is a remix of Mare Tranquilis, which is one of my favorite pieces because it was such a rush of writing, such a perfectly formed concept for me. It's a collection of poems from different people, all reacting to the aliens landing among us. The poetry is really beautiful - lyrical and clean and still. Something I would never be capable of writing and I'm a little breathless over it.

Both of these original stories have personal meaning to me, and it's really... not trascendental, but strange and wonderful to see people react to them, to see their small moments transformed, transmuted.

I haven't heard from the person who's story I remixed yet, but she may be just as busy. Or she may have hated the remix. Shrug. I have some doubts that the final product was what was intended, but I remain pleased with my effort. But I really want the author reveals so I can see if I'm right!!

In other words, the girl who lives upstairs from me has clearly acquired a new "partner." One who is making me desperately wish that our landlord hadn't installed wood flooring upstairs. They start having sex about 12:10 a.m., finish about 13 minutes later, and in the meantime, I worry that my ceiling is going to come down on top of me. I'm tempted to be one of those cranky old women who pound the ceiling with a broom, or at the very least leave a little note on her door saying, "Congratulations for getting some. Since you've repeated the same pattern for the last four nights, let's hope he/she/it learns a little longevity and a little variation if the relationship lasts. And if you don't mind, try and get some before midnight or significantly after because for the former I won't care, and for the latter I'll be asleep and the only one you'll piss off is the cat and he can't reach the ceiling, nor can he write notes."
